Sad Sad News From The Vet Yesterday

We found out that our dog Red has cancer. It was a very sad day indeed. Red is ten years old and he has been having fatty bumps. He has short hair so you can see them quite well. I’ve been taking him to his local vet and Dr. Alfonso checked them every time he comes here and he’s had several needle biopsies on a few of them. Well last week we took him in for a re-check and the path report came back positive for Lymphoma. We took him back into the local vet last night for blood work and the vet here is going to talk to the Oncologist south of here to see if he’ll be a good candidate for chemo.

I'm so sorry Jann that you have to go through this with Red. The worst thing to deal with is a serious illness like cancer in your kids, furry or not. My dog Moki was diagnosed with the same cancer about a year ago. She is doing so well after chemo and has been cancer free almost as long. I hope that you find the best option for your family and Red. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

I can't help thinking how funny his wrinkly forehead is. I just love how confused a dog can look even (especially ) when he's not thinking about anything. Here's hoping the treatment works well and Red keeps on failing to understand things for a good long while yet.

The lumps of lymphoma are the lymph nodes themselves that are enlarged. Lymphoma is already in the entire lymphatic system, which is everywhere in the body by the time it's discovered. So there's no benefit to removing them because it's already systemic. And removing lymph nodes causes huge amounts of edema in that area because the lymph nodes are what drain fluids and put them back in circulation. So theres no benefit in removing them. At least Red won't have to go through surgery! Once he starts reponding to chemo they will shrink down to normal size again.

Jann - I'm so sorry that you have to go through this. I'm sure some of the vets have more info on this, but I was told when my cat had cancer that animal chemo is actually not as bad as human chemo, so we'll hope for the best for your precious Red. I love the pictures of him interacting with your chams and look forward to many years of them to come.
