San Deigo Wildfires

Man i HOPE ALL OF YOU ARE DOING OKAY OUT THERE, IM a native, sorry a ll caps.
man, im in az right now. I wish you all strength.Peace to all my East County peeps.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you that have been evacuated and who might have to be. I'm glad that I live in an area where there have never been any fires. Its scary.

However, we were next in line to be evacuated years ago when a train full of chemicals was derailed not far from us. Thank goodness it was brought under control before we would have had to leave!

Stay safe!

Well Wishes

I know how you guys out there feel. It is very scary. I was born and raised in New Orleans and lived there until Katrina devastated my home and business. The one thing I learned was google earth (the satelite) was not updated as the disaster got worse. We looked at our business and house and it looked fine; when we were able to get into the city it was destroyed. We couldn't even make it to our business for 3 weeks. We had to wait til the water subsided. Please take your pets and strays if you can. Try to encourage your neighbors to do the same. They are defenseless against these types of disasters. And remember the wildlife are going to be homeless as well. I pray for everyones safety and the animals/reptiles. No matter what happens you have to look to the positive no matter how bad it seems someone else usually has it worse. And everything happens for a reason.

:) Elise

Thank you everyone!

On behalf of my family and all those that I know affected by this
I thank everyone for their well wishes and positive energy sent our collective way :)
Things could have been worse and it seems that there were some lessons learned
from the last all time record breaker fire we had in 2003.

The map page I gave the link for is about as good as it gets and is updated as info gets out.
There's so much going on over such a large area that it's difficult to get a grasp upon it

For example:
The amount of land currently burned in San Diego county alone by the fire(s)
is equal to the land mass for the Hawaiian island of Oahu !

and it might get as large as the big island by the time it's done.
San Diego is the nations 7th largest city and it's spread over quite a distance indeed.
Getting info back out to people is a low priority right now, fighting the fire is first.
We've been all asked to not use our cell phones to allow emergency communications to get through.
so the development of maps like this is really helping people know what's happening
as the fire burns it's way to the pacific.

The local media is relying upon mostly fluff and loops of old footage
While the major sites like CNN are pathetically out of touch and relying upon yesterdays outdated info... etc.
sorry if I'm ranting... back on topic.

For all the other members out here and their families caught up in this
I hope that we'll all be alright when this is all over.
you all have my best wishes and support.

my prayer goes for you all who currently affected by the fire disaster.
I live in Los Angeles.
I can see the smokes in the sky.
May God protects you and your family always

Update

Thanks everyone for all the love. I for one, was not evacuated and I am back to work today (at a medical center). I know others aren't so lucky. Things seem to be getting better though and it is nice to see the City pulling together to help those in need.

Poor Pablo is still hung up in my hot apartment. I can't open the windows due to smoke and it is stuffy and in the 80's in there, even at night. Yesterday he was crawling all over the screen, but still his normal color, so I assuming not too hot.

Hey Its great to hear some of you are ok. Hopefully things get better instead of worse. Good luck and hope to hear from more of you soon. We'll continue keep you all in our prayers.

I can't believe these fires are still going on and that there is now question that two may have actually have been set  :( I just cannot imagine what it is like to have to evacuate your home and get your familes & animals out safely. Like kinyonga I, too live in an area that has little fear of fire, serious hurricane, flooding, earthquake, etc. A blizzard is about as bad as it gets and that is to be expected. Fires that burn for days - weeks - on end and destroy hundreds of thousands of acres of land are not. I truly hope that when all of this is over we will be reading few bad/sad posts.

Even though I am 3000 miles away we (Cyrus and the gang) are all thinking of you and sending positive energy your way.

Blizzards....burr, makes me shiver just thinking about it. It seems the middle parts of SD county are clearing up. For the first time since Sunday night I'm putting the chameleons back outside for some sun. My family and I are safe, still waiting to hear from a few friends though.

update from where I'm at

pohchunyee asked in another thread how San Diego was doing
so here's a little update from where I'm standing.
  • Most of the fires are now "contained" the ocean breeze has returned
things have cooled down and the air is breathable again. :)
  • Most of the fires seem to have been started by arsonists.
  • Lots of people lost everything they had well over 1,000 homes burned.
    071027pool.jpg

  • The new evacuation method seems to have worked very well
so the loss of human life is minimal.
  • A few people got busted for being fire bugs (one got shot dead by the cops :))
  • FEMA hires only assholes and jerkoffs (no really... they are... honest ).
  • Hardly anyone looting and those that are ... have usually come from mexico.
  • The largest evacuation center was overrun with food donations and helping hands :)
  • Supplies donated to the stadium evacuation center had truckloads stolen by illegal aliens.
(who eventually got caught in the act and made excuses about it all to the border patrol).:mad::mad:
  • Using circus/party clowns and stilt walkers keeping people entertained
as well as having every specialist you could imagine at the evacuation centers... is a very good idea.
  • Basically it was the opposite of the stadium in New Orleans
with it's roaming gangs of rapists, thug looters, mercy killings of the elderly
and cops loading up their pickups with stolen loot. ymmv:rolleyes:

How are the other members out there doing?
I hope that everyone made it through alright.

had a discussion with some people about this. we came to the conclusion that while I am very proud of the way that everyone handled this situation we cannot compare the two and I don't think it is fair to.

things like the poverty level and other problems before katrina had a huge impact on what happened after.

also with Katrina it affected a large area all at one time. while these fires affected a large area there was a true "fire line" that made the evacuation of people more manageable.

don't get me wrong...like i said i am very proud but I feel it is unfair to clump these two things together.

We're doing well too. I can still smell some smoke, but it helps that it has gotten much cooler (72 degrees) and even started to drizzle! I am opening my windows and running the Hepa filter at night. John and I already cleaned the soot off our patio. We spent the day "spring cleaning" yesterday.

This kind of thing makes you more appreciative of life and kind of take inventory on the important things in life. My friend lives in Rancho Bernardo and had to evacuate. She said that they did not get the reverse 911, but woke up to popping and looked out her window and could see the fire not too far away. I guess it is a work in progress. They learned a lot from Cedar fires and hopefully will learn a lot more from this one. She has many friends that lost their homes or came back to being the only house on the street.

All in all, I think it was handled very well. I felt very loved by so many phone calls from loved ones. Again, thanks for the concern from the cham community!

Well, I agree that the fire moving along and a step by step evacuation
is somewhat different than deciding to stay in your homes while a
major hurricane approaches days in advance.

I fully agree that the crux of this whole thing is the manner in which people reacted before and after the hurricane/fire
and not the situation itself ( fire, flooding or earthquake) that defines a persons character
or the character of a community for that matter.

As for myself, I really don't believe peoples poverty level can be used
as a legit excuse to attack your neighbor or loot their place when they're down.
New Orleans residents made some cities actually block off their areas
from flooding refugees after they looted and burned the evacuation centers!

I don't see race or poverty as justifying some people's bad behavior.
I can see how disaster planning, preparation and having your act together makes a serious difference. ymmv

{added} Sara, yeah those HEPA filters sure do come in handy for more than lab work huh? hehehe*

hummm ...
I guess that leaves it as a chicken and egg sorta thing

Do messed up people with bad ethics end up being poor?
or does being poor make people do messed up things?

I think it's a bit of both...
with the inability to make decent and ethical choices getting the greater part.

eggs

my cham had just laid her first clutch but we had to evacuate so i grabbed my two breeders but had to leave the eggs, i came back to what was left of the house and the sand had actually saved 9 out the 70 or so eggs.

holyshit
I'm so sorry to hear about the house and everything that you've must have lost
is everyone alright?
what part of town did this happen in?

I'm sure if you need egg incubation one of us locals can help you out
I'm also sure that we can provide some pet housing for your breeders
to make things easier on you too.

wishing the best JC.
