Here's a link to the UV site I believe Dr. Francis Banes' work appears here or will some time shortly. Because the Dr. has not yet published, Dave was not able to share hard copies of what he's been digesting.

The bulk of the info gathers around the UV problems that are being worked out in the UVB bulbs. Any date on the bulbs prior to April 09 needs to be brought to the attention of the seller. Those manufactured after that date are the healthful ones.
Dave's presentation was a slide show explaining essentially how the correct phosphor inside the tube or bulb converts the right "curve" in the UV spectrum to allow UVB only in lieu of UVC which is deadly. (I'm presenting the short-hand version here in my explaination, there was a lot more to it than this).
He said that he knew a woman who was sold a set-up and her reptile died within two weeks. She then bought a new animal and a new set up. The new animal was doing great until one day she accidentally broke the light for the new set up. She remembered she had the old light so she used that one and a couple days later her new animal died. This was back when we were all having problems trying to get the UVB right.
Dave said he sent the bulb to the UK to have it analyzed by experts there and their report indicated that we were pretty much radiating our pets. Thus the change since April 09 to sell better lighting systems. The problem is, there was no re-call because apparently they wanted to continue to sell what was on the shelf as they phased in the better units. That's why it's so important, obviously to open the boxes and check those dates. He also feels that we should educate sellers when possible to keep more animals from harm.
Personal note:
Thank you Chamelisa and Jeff for hosting our meeting...what an inspiration! And thank you Dave Weldon for providing more insight into the world of Chameleon husbandry we love so well. It was great seeing everyone! It was a good turn out! See you next time!
