Scentsy?

Hope I am posting this question in the correct place... I have a Scentsy Warmer that heats wax with a light and makes the place smell yummy. Can I use one in my bedroom without harming Rebel? I love making my apartment smell good but not at the expense of my babies.... Thanks for any suggestions..

I found this with a quick search:
http://scentsyblog.com/scentsy-blog/entryid/101/fragrance-safety-clearing-up-the-confusion.aspx

But did not find any data on Scentsy's website regarding ASTM compliance, etc. I'm not sure if scented melting wax has any restrictions or standards other than the scenting chemicals used and safety standards for combustibles. Scentsy claims to emit no VOCs, but that does not mean that the fragrances/essential oils used are not irritating to sensitive respiratory systems. (I myself have a major skin sensitivity to certain natural essential oils and have to avoid those candles/lotions/soaps/etc like the plague.) Any tests that have been performed on toxicity are most likely to be for mammalian (human) safety.

I doubt you are going to find a solid answer, as I doubt anyone has performed any definitive studies on volatilized fragrances and reptiles. Your best bet might be to see if anyone has performed any research on birds. You'll find loads of anecdotal evidence supporting both sides.

Full disclosure, I burn scented candles on occasion and have a glade-style plug-in in the living room that I turn on periodically. I used them when I had birds and still do with my cham. Honestly, I am more paranoid about Teflon fumes and cleaning chemicals :D Just remember, if it's strong to you, it's ten times stronger to your pets, plus reptiles have much slower metabolisms so it takes them much longer to fight off/clear out toxins and irritants.

My two cents: Use infrequently, space it as far as you can from your cham, make sure there is plenty of ventilation, and monitor your babies for eye/respiratory changes. I think it would be fine.

I would be very curious to hear any anecdotal evidence or experience people on the forum have, though!

For what its worth, we use multiple Scentsy's in our home and it has not bothered our Cockatoo for years now. Again, not the same, but may provide you some feedback.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will be overly protective and not use it in my bedroom where my babies are. I am determined to find some kind of air freshener that will be safe around my boys. I wonder about the all natural orange spray. I like cleaning with alcohol but that is strong for a little bit and I'm sure it would bother them. Hummmm I like using as few chemicals as possible when cleaning my apartment I just need something safe to use in my room. thanks again.

I think you could use a dried floral pomander or fresh flowers/herbs in the bedroom without any worries. Lavender would be nice, light, and relaxing.

I think better safe than sorry is the way to go. Which means no "air fresheners" around the animals. Why do you need fragranced air in that room? Does it stink? could you open a window and air it out?

I live in a small apartment and at this time it is to hot to open the windows. (this is not a problem when it cools down enough to open the windows) My boys are in my bedroom because we have two cats and the bedrooms are the only rooms that have windows. (I live in a tower so only one side of my apartment has windows) I leave the door closed most of the time so it just gets a little stale. Guess I'll just have to get a cham safe plant that smells good to add to Rebels free range... Thanks for everyone's suggestions

how about locking the cats in another room for an hour, so you can open the door to your room and run a fan to help with the stale-ness?
Another idea is to drill three large holes in the lower half of the door, so that air can exchange without cats coming in?

i dont have an official scentsy lol but i have a candle warmer, glass bowl and some of the scented cubes.. im not into strong smells. I usually do sometihng light like bamboo water or garden rain or whatever its called... and my room is well ventilated with the door open and it doesnt seem to bother my chams (still pretty new, going on 5 months now so i cant tell you about long term but they dont seem bothered by it no more or less active when i run it. i also dont run it all the time either though

oxymoron

How is that you are overly protective? Like I have always said, a kid can say they are hungry, sick, or any complaint they may have. Your pet can not. Your dog or cat may alert you to somethings, but most pets (ie lizards, snakes, fish, etc) can't speak up for themselves or change their location. So you are never over protective if you are looking out for them. Now if you are making your 26 yr old child be home before dark, you might have some issues. Seriously, try running your scentsy when your animals are enjoying some outdoor time. Any strong irritants, if any, will dissipate before they come back inside.

Only the two bedrooms in my apartment have doors...lol They are open when I am home I just do not trust the cats when I'm not around.. I am renting so drilling holes in the bottom of the door is out of the question.:(
I will be fine not using anything. I just like things to smell yummy...:D

The reason I asked is because we had baby gerbils years ago that had a very bad reaction and the only thing we did was put a plug-in behind their cage. We removed the plug-in, aired out the room and there were fine. I am just an overly protective mom...even with my human kids. lol Drives my daughter, who is now in college, crazy. I am worse with Rebel because I know that he can't tell me something is wrong until its too late. Unfortunately, I live in a tower building so I have no outdoor space to let Rebel hang out in. Hes not one for being held so taking him for a walk is out of the question.

tower building

Both condos I lived in had balconies. For my guys, I build replica (as close to as possible) cages outside for them. That way I can get them outside as much as possible. Surprisingly the east coast of VA has perfect weather for chams from May-Sept. I don't know if have a balcony or not, vertigo?, or other prohibiting factors. Going outside for my veils changed all their personalities (3 good & 1 just plain nasty) or maybe it was adulthood.

No balconies here.. That is why I want to build him a nice big enclosure. I also want to add to his free range. When he travels out of town with me (I have no one to help me out here in Houston) I get him outside as much as I can and he loves it. I live on the 4th floor so I have the weird windows that open out sideways (hope that makes sense)so having his cage and free range in front of the window only allows him to enjoy looking outside because I get no sun light that doesn't shine through glass..

Thanks again for all your comments and suggestions..
