i have a quick question... the popular screen cages,, what type of screen are they made of???

i've been told pvc or plastic was the best material to use as far as screen materials go...

thanks,, lisa

the best screen i have found was plastic coated screen. It has wire with a rubber/plastic like coating. The only drawback is i could only find it in 1/2" sized screen. So if your feeding small feeders and letting them free range you will have escapes. I had to hand feed or cup feed. But its great for chams feet. And they cant get rub problems on their nose if you use this type. There is a company screencages.net that offers larger sized screen cages. Im ordering my next cage from them to try it out.

thanks for the replys guys,,, :)
seems like most everyone is using aluminum screened cages... is there no problem with them rusting over time???

thanks,, lisa

Aluminum doesn't rust. You will get some build up of minerals in the water, particularly at the joints of the cage, but rust shouldn't be an issue.

Aluminum still oxidizes... like steel.... but aluminum is far superior for our application.

DIY cages and the Zoo Med cages are both made with steel mesh.

ChamEO, LLL Reptile, FLChams, Tiki Tiki, amazing blue and kammerflage all sell the aluminum screen cages.

But only one of them is a non profit, and with your purchase you help support a valuable resource to the community. ;)

If aluminum rusted there would not be a push to recycle aluminum.

The 'push' to recycle is to save resources.... and our planet. BUT it is also a lot cheaper to make products from a recycled material than it is virgin materials. This is true for steel and aluminum and other materials.

Not sure who you are replying to about aluminum rusting... If you are referring to me, I never said aluminum rusts. I did say it oxidizes.

Oxidation of Aluminum

thanks everyone..

so it looks like the common practice is to go with aluminum screen.

one more question about it and i'll move on to my 100's of others!! ;) as i've said, i'm very green!!! ;)

with say, daily misting and/or dripping, about how long will and aluminum cage last before it's time to "redo" the set up??? years??? decades??? just a ball park figure??

thanks again all,,, lisa

Thanks for the plug. I'll update the prices on my site to be a little more competitive. I'm just short handed these days.

Take care.
