Sick chameleon

Hey! I’m needing educated recommendations for my panther chameleon! She’s been sick about 6 weeks, loss of appetite, dehydrated, closed eyes, lethargic. I’ve taken her to the vet 2 weeks ago, they did an ultrasound to check for eggs. (None seen) they treated for parasites just in case. They gave her fluids. She still hasn’t gotten any better.

  • Your Chameleon - female panther chameleon 11 months old. Had her 6 months
  • Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon? We only held her once in the first 5 months, but had to get her out to take her to the vet 2 weeks ago, and now every day when we go to check on her she comes right to us & crawls onto our hand
  • Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders? Crickets, roaches, super worms. She was eating at 9:30am and 4pm. She was eating about 10-20 small bugs a day, then she started losing her appetite & only eats one or 2 every few days. The insects get the gel calcium and then veggies/fruits daily
  • Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule? She was getting zoo med repti calcium without d3 every feeding and the multiple vitamins every other Friday
  • Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking? She had a fountain and I would see her drink daily, but after she got sick I read that fountains could breed bacteria so I took it out & have a dripper & her cage gets misted 3 times a day and has a fogger on 9:30pm-9:30am
  • Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites? Her feces was brown but urinate was orange. The vet didn’t test it but treated her for parasites anyways
  • History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:

  • Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions? 24x24x 48 screen
  • Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule? Her lights are on 9:30am-9:30pm t5 ho 5% zoomed 75 w heat lamp
  • Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps? 80-85 basking. 70-75 lowest area in cage. Night 65-70. Thermometer
  • Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity? 40% during day, 70-80 at night. She has foggers & humidifiers
  • Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind? 2 money trees
  • Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? Not near any vents, she’s in the corner up on a stand about 2 ft away from ceiling low traffic.
  • Location - Where are you geographically located? Indiana
Her eyes have been closed most of the day for about 6 weeks now. She’s lost appetite, barely eating, barely drinking, her urinate has been orange. she still is bright orange, still roams around with her eyes closed or one cracked, stays at the top of the cage. We took her to the vet 2 weeks ago, they gave her fluids, liquid food, an ultrasound to check for eggs ( didn’t see any) and treated her for parasites. She hasn’t gotten any better. Still the same

Do you have photos of the cage, lights included, and the chameleon you can post please?
Do you have a photo of the X-ray?

You said her urates are quite orange…so you’re right, she needs hydration. I hope she hasn’t picked up a bacteria from the water in the fountain.

Regarding parasites, did the vet test for them or just decide to treat her in case she had some?

What brand of light is the long tube light? Is it a UVB light?

She looks very bloated. Did the vet say she was developing follicles?

The vitamin powder…does it have D3 in it? What form of vitamin A does it have in it? Maybe you can post a photo of the ingredients, if you don’t know the form of vitamin A.

I hope not too! The vet just really didn’t seem to know what she was talking about. She didn’t test them, just went ahead & treated her. I called her yesterday and she said we could start antibiotics ( by injection every 3 days) which I don’t feel comfortable doing myself 😫 & no the vet said nothing about follicles, I’m not sure what that is. The light is a t5 ho repti zoo 24 w. I’ll attach pics of the vitamins . And she’s been having me give her this liquid food every other day

Do you have any recommendations?

Hi! I'm here too and will offer as much help as I possibly can. If you can share a photo of her x-ray that would be a great start. I am also concerned with how big your girl looks and would be surprised if she did not have eggs. Do you have a laybin for her?

Thank you so much!! Yes she has a bin! It has organic soil, sand and coconut fiber mixed! I’m calling the vet now to see if they can email the ultrasound!

Awesome. What parasite is she being treated for and what med is being given for that?
So I brought in stool samples from the day prior, she said it was too old to test, and that she would just go ahead and give her the parasite meds. I just requested all the records, they said it could take up to 3 days to send it. But they’d get it it asap. So as soon as they send it I’ll upload it for you! I just feel that she really didn’t know what she was talking about. & the visit was $400 & I just don’t have that to keep taking her back to them for them to not tell me anything

Going to the vet can be frustrating because it can take some time to figure out what is going on...and unfortunately it can be expensive. I feel your pain on that.

You do want to make sure that you have an exotic vet with chameleon care experience. I am not a vet, and am only a hobbiest, however I do worry about treating for things you do not know is the actual cause of her decline. Once chameleons start closing their eyes during the day, you need to act quickly, taking blind jabs in the dark on treatment may cause more damage than help...but again, I'm not a vet and I was not in your vet appointment so I only know the information that was shared here.

I'm going to attach a vet list for you, this was compiled from others in our community who have had good experiences with such vets and recommend them to others here. Check it out and see if there is one on here that is close to you.

Oops...now attached.

One thing I would press for, is if she is possibly egg bound. Has she laid any eggs in the past? If so when?

That’s what i originally thought too! And that’s why i had them do the ultrasound. She said she had a bulge in her belly that could be eggs, but after the ultrasound she said that it was just gas in her stomach 🤔 but I’ve never been around reptiles at all, she’s our first one. & just trying to take care of her, I thought it’s been crazy long for her to go so long with her eyes closed, 6 weeks. But it’s not like she’s getting worse. She’s just staying the same. & she will open her eyes( or one) if you scare her or touch her, and she’ll come to us if we put our hand out n look around for a bit while she’s out. But she’s not been at the bottom of her cage & I’ve never even seen her step foot into the egg bin.

The one listed in Indianapolis is the one I took her to. They just called me back and said I could bring her in to treat her with antibiotics n they’d show me how to give the injection. & I have to give it to her every 3 days, I just don’t know if I’m comfortable with doing that. She hates to be grabbed, n she said I’d have to grab her & hold her still while the shot was injected
