Sick Oliver on Ceftaz

Yes, as of today it was still at the lab. I should have the results tomorrow.

The fungal under his legs has improved tremendously with the cleanings. :)
 
Results from lab were unconclusive. The vet is getting in contact with a specialist to figure out why it is taking him so long to respond to the meds.

They did confirm it is not CANV, which is really good news :eek:

After 4 days of cleanings his skin has improved tremendously! We still do not know what type of fungus but the vet should hear back from a specialist in the next day or so. His skin is shiny from the cleaner. As you can see it is no longer thick and yellow around his limbs and the original injury has almost no necrotic spots remaining. :)

Today was a little sad because I believe he aspirated for about 30 minutes. I was about to rush to the emergency vet when he stopped. I put him under his heat lamp and he is moving around normally and is displaying no signs of distress. I will be monitoring him throughout the night.

How do I make sure his lungs have cleared and what are the symptoms of pneumonia or anything else he could develop as a result?
 
There is literally no end to his problems :(


Oliver has been on a liquid diet for almost 2 months now...can that cause IBS? There is no blood in the urate but spots of dark blood are present in the fecal. This is not every poop...yesterday he had a normal poop and he hasn't had any blood since it came out with his sperm (maybe a week ago?).

Vets are closed on Sundays and most likely closed on Monday due to Labor Day...
He is acting normal now and I have him under his lamp to stay warm. :(
 
Update, after his bad poop this morning I gave him a few hours before I tried to give him any food. After that I gave him a shower, some repta boost and all of his other meds. He has had no heavy breathing and he is keeping his food + meds down. ( All of this happened over the day, not in one sitting)
 
Is it recommend to give a small amount of plain yogurt to chameleons on antibiotics? Even with all the water he's getting, Oliver is still super dehydrated. I learned in biology that in humans without that flora, it prevents water from being absorbed and I was wondering if this was the same in chameleons.
 
Your suspicion is correct.
Just as we can have problems with normal intestinal flora die-off from antibiotics, chams can too.
If you have yogurt with live active cultures, then it may help but it might restore the flora faster to administer one of these products

IMHO not sure I would use yogurt...it contains dairy products that a cham's GI tract may not be able to handle and you don't want to add any systemic stress. The Benebac may be a safer option.

I wonder if the occasional blood you are seeing is also a sign of the fungus' affecting internal organs? Maybe not...just a thought.
 
He's gone. I found him at the bottom of the cage yesterday after school, so I rushed him to the vet and the vet gave him some fluids and I gave him a little pedialyte and he perked up. I put him to bed around 7 and I woke up every couple hours to check and I think around 2 am he was gone.

I really miss you buddy :(
 
My heart goes out to you. I was really hoping he would make it. He was a true fighter and so were you. I am so sorry for your loss. Rest in peace Oliver, you sweet litle man.
 
damn... ive been following this since the beginning, was hoping oliver would pull through. He fought hard!.... poor guy he will now rest.

I know how very hard you worked to help him and it is very frustrating, as well as very sad when you've done all that you can.

Thank you guys, so much. I find it hard to convey my gratitude for each and every one of you and it really means a lot that you guys care.
 
I know I should get a necropsy but I am not. I'm letting the vet get some blood and another skin sample so we can continue to try and find out the type of fungus but I believe his body couldn't handle the medication and he just let go. He hadn't eaten solid food for months and he wasn't retaining water like he should, even with showers, soaks and force feeding and he was so weak. I don't want them cutting him open, his body deserves to rest :(
