Silkworm breeding question

Hi! This is my first try at breeding silkworms. I'm wondering if the toilet paper rolls for cocooning should be placed in the enclosure horizontal like I have them or vertical? Also, what temperature is best for this stage as they get big and ready to cocoon? I wasn't able to find a bunch of info on this part. Thanks in advance!
Trying to recreate this DIY box, you do you happen to have a side view picture? What does the box sit on top of? i.e. What catches the frass under the opening of the gutter guard?

OP hasn’t been on since January. It appears that they cut a hole in the bottom of a bin and have the gutter guard over it. Not sure what that black bottom piece is, but I’m going to guess that to clean the frass, they just remove it, lift the box and let gravity happen. It’s a great idea and think I might just have to try it too. :)

Hi,

May I ask what are the clumps of greenish brown stuff that the silkworms crowd on in your picture?

Mine prefer the toilet paper rolls the way you have placed them. Some of them choose different places even when the rolls are available. I usually have these in a separate box and move those who have entered the pre pupal stage when the moment arrives.

As for temperature, well I'm in Canada so at certain points of the year, like right now, it isn't so warm. I keep the room at 21 degrees celsius and they still come out fine. They cocoon and mate just the same.
