One of my silkworms just cocooned. I always try to feed off before this happens but one did and I dont' know if the others are going to be following suit soon also. So, what do I do with the cocoon (if I want to feed the moth) and how long will it take to hatch??? Thank you all silkworm experts out there!!!!

Hey Carol!! I wouldn't consider myself and expert.....experienced, yes!! :p It will be about a week before the moth hatches. The moths don't fly or eat, so you can put the cocoon in a plastic container with out a lid. Line the container with papertowel because the moth will expel the waste from the metamorphosis and that can get messy! You can feed the moth at anytime. If you have a female moth, ur chams "poo" will contain eggs as the moth passes, so don't be alarmed!! The moths live from a few days to a week. You may have others ready or almost ready to spin, since they grow at a similar rate. Put some toilet paper or cut paper towel rolls in with your worms to spin in. Have fun!! :D

Ok thanks, but if I don't put a lid on, wont the moth fly out when it hatches? Also, thanks for the heads up on the eggs, for sure I would have been freaking! I am not sure if I am gonna feed they moth, they are kinda cute and I will probably feel bad! I guess I will just have to look away! ok so you said they don't fly! dah!! but you mean they never fly?

yes they are flightless. cant fly.;)

They are flightless, they are like flightless fruitflies, they have wings but cant fly, im guessing its because they are too heavy.

How big are your silkworms? I have some monster ones and am looking forward to them to cocoon up. how do you get them to cocoon also haha, this is my first time i got silkworms and the place messed up my order so i got some big ones which i thought i would keep to see if they would cocoon.

I don't really know! I always try to feed them off before they coccoon.
I had fed most of the big ones off so far so i am guessing it was one of the smaller ones that cocooned. I thought the silkworm breeder told me they cocoon after about 5 weeks of age, but I might be wrong on this. I have been getting them for about 6 months and this if the first time it happened!

Be prepared for mega cuteness! I LOVE silkmoths - they've got to be the prettiest moths ever! :D
I know, i saw yours, that is why I don't think I can have the heart to do it! I guess i would have to set it in the cage and walk away cause I surely do not want to see him eating it,I have enought trouble seeing him eat the silkworms because they are so gentle and sweet!

My guys go crazy for the moths. Let the moths mate, lay some eggs, then feed them off and dont look. They are very fluffy little moths. I love when they flutter super fast like they are trying to fly but they can't.

Some of my silkworms are like 3-4" they are huge haha hopefully they will pupate soon and ill get some pretty moths out of it :D

lol It was just a guess they are monsters, ill have to actually get a ruler and see how long they are, ill try to take a pic if i can, camera isnt working but i have an iphone and they take some decent pics, ill have to find a ruler too :p ill try to have them posted later tonight

Here is one of my silkies pssh. He is one of the biggest, but there are a few that are bigger XD this big boy measured at just under 3" but he was a little scrunched up and not all stretched out. Let me know if they are going to pupate soon!

I've had silkies pupate at only 2" so... Mine always pupate when I can see their "pulse" in their "spine." Its kinda wierd looking. Make sure to give them toilet paper rolls or something to coccoon in!

ok, i can see the vein pulsing in like all of them haha ill be sure to put some toilet paper rolls in there tonight :D and hopefully tomorrow ill have some that have pupated :D however i did try this before with a big one i took it out and put it in a separate container with a toilet paper roll and some mulberry leaves and he died after a day started to go black and was laying on its back

yeah i have my guys on a mesh lid for an aquarium, the mesh is pretty big so their droppings can fall through it so they arent walking around in their own grossness haha. I also put some branches and stuff in there so they can climb as well, im going to put some rolls in there
