Silkworm question

I am planning to order some silkworms for my guy today. This will be the first time I have had them. What do I feed them? The smallest amount I can get on this site is 100, which seems like a lot. What size container should I keep them in? Any info will be greatly appreciated!

I keep mine in a plastic tupperware container that is about 10 inches long X 6inches wide with no lid. Believe it or not, they don't crawl out. You feed them the chow they sell or if you have a mulberry bush or tree or know someone who does, you can feed the leaves. Just make sure they have not been sprayed with pesticide. They will also eat shaved carrots but that is in a pinch if you run out of mulberry. I don't believe they can be sustained on that. Mine did eat the carrots but they did not go crazy on it like the mulberry. Sandrachameleon gave me that tip. She also said they would eat dandelion leaves but I tried and there were only a few that took a few bites of the leaves. Mulberry is really what you want.

I actually order silkworms once every couple months.

The good --> They are great for your chameleon
The bad --> They have no immune system and tend to die off quickly if you touch them with unwashed hands or use any utensils that aren't cleaned. Also they poop (legit term is FRAS) a lot. A LOT !

Here's how i keep them. https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/nrupaw/716-silkworm-enclosure.html

Good luck!

I can't comment on the silkworms, but have you thought about trying Phoenix worms?? They're extremely high in calcium, and stay alive for quite sometime in a small cup that they are shipped in, and basically don't need to be gutloaded. Your cham will run through them FAST..At least mine is right now, and it's the first worm he's accepted.

I went to the local pet store today, to pick up some crickets to hold Kush over till we get the bulk shipment in. I was so excited to find out that they had phoenix worms(well superworms, but aren't they the same thing?)! The only problem is that they were HUGE!! So I'll have to wait a while to get them from there, but it's good to know I have a local supplier! Since I've been doing some reading today, I do think I'd rather feed the phoenix worms. They seem much easier.

Phoenix are not supers! Supers look like big mealworms and Phoenix, calciworms and reptiworms all look like lil larvae. Sorry to inform you.

From my understanding phoenix worms are different from super worms. Phoenix's are soldier fly maggots, also known as "calciworms" due to their high calcium content.

Supers are a good feeder (in moderation). Some chams have been known to become addicted to them, so limit your offerings.

I'm going to have to order some silkworms. I have a dwarf mulberry tree growing in my chameleon's enclosure, but 100 would probably defoliate it fairly quickly

Shoot! Reptiworms! That's right! I keep getting the two mixed up in my head. Ok. I will order some Phoenix worms. I did notice last night when I was looking at some Phoenix worms online that they were different than the superworms at the store. Maybe someday I will get this all right! haha Thanks! I remember now reading about chams getting hooked on the superworms. I am going to stay away from them! ;)

I was under the understanding that you could gutload silks the same as crickets!! Is this Mulberry good for our chams??

MollyT,,, where are you ordering from.. im looking but havent found them where i usually get them from.... thanks,, lisa

Well, I was going to get them from Mulberry Farms, but I just heard they might be out. I think Linda's gone buggy had some, as well as small pet feeder.

I've been told lindasgonebuggy is out and I am having trouble with smallpetfeeders log in... I've contacted them twice, got an original response that was supposed to help but didn't..... Maybe later...

Well, maybe Kush will just have to wait a bit to try them. I will let you know if I can find them anywhere else.

i had problems with smallpetfeeders' website as well a few weeks back. However, I called and spoke to the manager, Dave, and was able to place the order over the phone. They're reconstructing their site right now. Best deals I've seen though
