silkworm sizes

hi, I was wondering if you all can help me.. trying to find ways to improve my products.

My question is, when MB/CS sell their silkworms in small and mediums. What sizes do they really come in???

I mean, I've ordered mediums before, but they came at 1.5 inch (much bigger than they described) but then I've heard they come 3/4 inch to other customers. Maybe my order was a fluke, I don't know.

what are your experiences. What do customers really expect to receive when they order sm/med ??

and also, how big can the mini silkworms grow in the cup? MB says they are hatchlings to 3/4 inch. That is a big difference. can they really grow to one inch long in the cup?? the chow will spoil in two weeks is what I've been told by others..

they seem to have some overlapping products... CS is much more straight forward but their prices are the same no matter what size it seems!

I have not any good experience with silks. No matter where I get them, they are always bigger than described. I believe it is because of the time span they have to sell them in . The smaller ones are kept for the future sale & the bigger ones get sold before they get too big to sell. Just my experience..

hey! you are in Long Island, me too!!

I noticed that MB is doing drop shipping. I think they send the extra silks that they didn't sell to someone in LA. this person grows them on leaves (cheaper) and do a dump sale that includes shipping. I got some and they were HUGE!! SO HUGE that i don't think any cham can eat it.

if you are not far, come pick some up from me. I have an overload of them. They are 1/2 small and 3/4 mediums... physically, and that's how I list them. But I am not sure what customers are expecting these days anymore...

the ones you get are too big, and then, others may think they are too small given that they always receive bigger ones than they ordered??:confused:

I get mine from Coastal, and when I spoke to Clare I told her it was for a baby panther. Mine come as small as 1/8in to 3/4 in. And ALOT of them. I only order 25 at a time and she sends me like 60!!.
Krash only gets 3 at a time, so they start getting too big and then I feel bad about getting rid of them :(

You mean the silkworms get too big and you get rid of them ?? but 3/4 inch is also what they call MEDIUM?? I just don't get it. You got the pod or what??

aw. thats such a shame.

the best way for you is to order eggs!! What I can do for you in the future is to give you small pods of pre made chow, and lots of eggs....that you can put away in the fridge. You can take one cup out every week to hatch on your own. (without doing anything else) I will show you how..

this will save you a ton of $$ as well as not waste anything!!

eggs are incredibly cheap and they will grow in that little cup to 1/2 on their own if you let them!

You should try Lady silk worm (Nancy) Great product and great customer service:)

I like getting the eggs...last time I ordered from CS I got an order of large, said to be about 1 in...but they were huge (2-3 inches), too big to feed to my cham and all immediately started to cocoon...I prefer the smalls if eggs are not available, then I grow to the size I need. :D

I agree, I think it is the best way to go. With my website, I like to be as descriptive as I can so that you know what you are getting. Pretty soon I will be offering diapaused eggs and FREE shipping. That means you can put them away and take them out after two months and hatch as many as you need whenever you want it.

Thanks for all your input!

So you sell them as eggs too? What do you do to get them to hatch? Do they hatch on their own? Is there any special way to taking care of them other than how you take care for hornworms?

they just hatch on their own in room temp. even at 65 degrees! but of course you can incubate them at 80 and they will hatch out faster.

Nothing special. You do just like the hornworms. But you need to be extra sanitary with them.. and they can't live in a cup forever. You either grate, slice, or pipe the chow and feed them daily.. to get them to grow larger.

With the cups, you let them stay there for 10 days at most and you need to feed them fresh food. (change them out)

My eggs are laid on paper. I breed them and I raise them two ways. On chow and leaves.

I sell leave raised silkworms with leaves to buy.
I also sell silkworm cups that can grow 1/2 inchers to full inchers.. those are no brainer and good for juvi's.

hmmm can you give me your link again, Ima go check it out I think I will buy some. I love trying new food with my chameleon anyways...

When my cham gets big enough for some worms I would love to do business with you lady silk. You seem very nice and great to buy from. Do you ship to California and do you sell superworms?

yes my website is www.ladysilkworm.com

it's interesting you should ask if i sell supers, i was just reading about breeding them!!

Can you tell me what sizes and count you would like???

I need to diversify and get into more stuff.

I use chicken mash and baby food as substrate coz I have these at home!

I used to breed sugar gliders and mealies :)

I also hatch chickens and ducklings.

Now I just need a cham!!

omg sugar gliders!!!! Those are soooooo freaking darling I used to want one so bad. lol Are you asking me what size i would like? or are u asking the other person taht just replied

another questoin...... so you say that cant live inthe cups forever, what kind of substrate would I need for them to live on? Do they need water?

I might buy the take out cup for $15 bux not sure u have alot of selections to pick from xD

what do you mean by selections? as in different feeders??

i am trying to build that up :)

no, silkworms don't need nothing but silkworm chow!

or leaves.

I've just updated more stuff.
