Silkworms

Since I've so many issues with my crickets dying, I ordered silkworms. I got them in today - they are kind of scary looking! Does anyone know if they bite? I normally hand feed a couple of my veileds phoenix worms, but I was too afraid to even try to hand feed these things! I put them on the end of a dowel rod and offered them - my female veiled sucked them up like a Hoover (but she'll eat anything that doesn't eat her first)! My others weren't quite as impressed. For those that feed silkworms - how do you offer them? Thanks!

I love hand feeding silkworms and no they will not bite. They are just big soft worms that are harmless. This is what makes them great feeders, there nutrition value and they cant move very fast. I just put them toward the top in the open like i said they dont move like at all and thats if i dont hand feed them.

They do not bite and actually they are great for calcium. I would just place 2-3 on a branch. they move slow and you gotta make sure their little feed grab on before you let go or they will fall.

From my experience silkworms do not bite. We feed our male silks by hand or just place them on one of his vines and he eats them up right away. With our female, she's more timid with hand feeding so we generally put them on the bottom of her enclosure, on a vine or in a cup.

Personally, I prefer silks to other worms like supers and butters.. the latter totally gross me out!

i usually hand feed them or put them around the cage for carmie to hunt. They can stick to branches pretty good sometimes and be a bit more challenge to snag occasionally.

Silkworms dont bite.
I put them on a branch or a wall. My chameleon only likes stuff that moves a lot, so if the silkworms arent moving enough to entice him I will put them "upside down" right in front of him. They flip themselves over fast, and thats enough to make the cham zap. Or I hold in my fingers and squeeze just a little, gently, which makes them squirm enough to catch his attention. Or I put in his feeding cup, and he knows anything in there edible.

if silk worms turn you off, wait until you see super worms or dubia roaches. Lol.

Ha HA!! I got over my sqeamishness pretty quickly after trying to feed with plastic gloves on. Now I am able to touch any bug to get the reward of hand feeding.

Silkies are nice, just put one on your finger and POW! with the supers (bite) and dubia (lots of little feet), I use blunt plastic tweezers, try those if you don't really want to handle the bugs or a plastic spoon.

Have fun!

ya, I'm squeamish with bugs too and I just look at silkies like caterpillers...with silk ;)

Supers BITE?! I have a bunch...DEF not going to try to hand feed those...ewww. Roaches totally creep me out so I dont even know if i can do Dubia and keep my food down lol
