Slugs

Does anyone know where I can buy slugs and/or snails for my cham that will be parasite free?

I went on a search for snails and it got to be a pain. Either the State or Federal FWS had them banned, you had to import from another country or they were aquatic snails.

I think what most people do and what I am doing is that I caught some 'wild' snails and I will be harvesting their second generation of production. I say second because I want them as clean as possible.

It is always a risk to feed your reptile anything you catch in your backyard due to pollutants.

If you do a SEARCH on 'snails" I think you will find a lot more postings on the subject, that is what I did.

Believe it or not there is an acutal Snail Forum and snail hobbyists - who knew!

they are fresh water snails, and wouldnt have that crazy salt concentration like a saltwater snail. other that that hes right all i am seeing is how to kill snails.

If I remember correctly, you can use wild caught snails, if you feed them clean food for a few days to clear out thier systems. There is a post in the system that better explains this; or Brock my be able to clarify it.

I have a post about feeding snails to chameleons. I don't suggest using wc snails...I do second generation onwards in a clean tank to be sure that they are parasite free. I also wouldn't use slugs. Since slugs don't have shells as a defensive plan, they often are mildly toxic, noxiously slimy (ever step on one and have it "slime" you?), and I know that banana slugs at least will make your mouth go numb.

I also don't suggest ever using aquatic snails- they are FILTHY. Especially compared to terrestrial snails....much worse.

Be careful and go slow. Snails are a luxury, not a necessary prey item.
