Smaller Species of Chameleon

Hi everyone!

So I am thinking of getting a pair of smaller sized chameleon no bigger than the 10-12" mark and just wanted some recommendations from you!

I have a fair bit of experience with reptiles & have 2 Panther Chameleons right now.
I have been learning toward B. Thamnobates or Carpet Chameleons. What do you think? Ive heard that Carpet chameleons can often be aggressive towards us and I'd rather a chameleon that wasn't.
So what have your experiences been with Bradypodion and Carpet's and is there any other species you would recommend, I'm open to anything :D

Thanks for reading!

I have had 3 veileds (2 females and 1 male), two Jacksons and my little Carpet boy. The Carpet was the smallest of the lot and the only one to ever bite me in 7 years of cham ownership! He had 'little man syndrome' Jackson's don't get very big and are gorgeous chameleons!

Oh really! Ill look into Jacksons, thanks for the suggestion!
What other species have you kept :)

I have not owned a chameleon yet, but plan to soon. I will be getting a trioceros sernfeldi, also known as a Rudis Cham, and they only get to 6". They don't have big tempers at all and their colors are bright green and wonderful. You might wanna check them out.

Oh wow, there a lovely colour! Where are you getting one from? I've never heard of them before! :)

The only place I have found a CB is FLChams for 200$ (with shipping) I'm gonna work for a month or so to get enough money, but hopefully someone has babies soon and I can get one from them. There are WC adults at LLLReptiles if you want, they are adjusted to captivity by now however. Best of luck!

I'd do some research on thamnobates.

Big Apple Herp has carpets for sale now, a little on the pricey side. I'd personally wait for forum member Dooley1 as he has CB often.

I have owned Veiled, Werner's, and Jackson's. And the Jackson's, and Werner's where real docile and the cool factor is of the charts. Of Course I could be a little biased. ;)

These people are beating me up.....all I asked for was a source to get a Rudis and they tell me that I'm not ready, that screens are better, that I should just get a puppy, and so on insulting things. I may only be 13 dudes but I know a lot. I'm in advanced placement currently and am taking Biology, English 1, Geometry, STEM, and other classes that don't really support my point. I'm in 8th grade. I'm smarter than 80%, if not 90% of the kids in my state. I know how to do research. I know how to be reasonable. You guys have posted a bad rep for me.....while I may have been impolite at first, I apologized multiple times and instead of accepting my apology and helping me, you insulted me and pretended that I'm just a small helpless 5 year old. Well I'm 13 and I'm a Herper. I catch creatures. I examine them. I release them. I buy others from pet stores. I take good care of them. Instead of being helped, I am being pounded by doubt and abnoxious people telling me that I can't and shouldn't raise a chameleon "without the proper amount of information." Well, John Locke has something to say to you. If you don't know what I mean, then you're Lost. (Whoever got that good for you.) I appreciate the people who gave me some good advice, and I will follow it. I will get a new heat lamp. I will not get a panther chameleon and stuff it in a 2' tall cage (thanks captain obvious.) and I will not mistreat my little guy. Ugh. I'm done arguing. If you aren't going to tell me where I can get a trioceros sternfeldi, don't bother talking. If you have good advice, such as another tool I need, hit me with the info. If not, well, why are you reading this. Guy who actually started this thread, rock on dude. Trace, you rock. A few others of you rock. Most of you rock, but I have given a bad impression of myself and therefore you think poorly of me. For that I am sorry, but I am really annoyed.

Hoping for something helpful,

There you go again Nicky. It would really be in your best interest if you would try to grow up a bit and stop running your mouth about all of us. You brought on all the negativity yourself. The blame lies on you and you really need to act a little more grown up and just own it. Instead of blaming others you need to take responsibility for yourself. You make a brand new thread nearly everyday and for what???? They all say the same thing and now your high jacking someone else's thread. And crying boo hoo. It's like your trying to recruit him to your way of thinking. You say your smarter than nearly anyone your age and maybe you are but you are not acting anymore mature then the next 10 year old. Just stop it!!!! This is a great website to get information and opinions from. You obviously hate opinions if they don't match your own or if they don't fit into your little cookie cutter way of thinking.

Sorry got off topic. To the one who actually started the thread. You say you might want to get a carpet chameleon. They are awesome and crazy beautiful but have extremely small life spans. A lot of people are ok with that and that's great but I just thought you might appreciate that little bit of information.

Tom,

First, welcome to the Forum! Good place for information

Another gentle chameleon that is smaller than Panthers is the Quadracornis; use the search feature (upper right corner), there are folks here that have them for sale at times.

Ignore the Nicky post in your thread he is just a kid who is wasting forum space.

CHEERS!

Nick:D

Chameleons are a very time dedicated hobby, not really based off of how smart you consider yourself. You being in 8th grade limits you on certain things, specifically your age. You need to be very self reliant to be able to care for them properly, especially a montane species. Transportation is something you need to go get food, supplies, to the vet, and so much more along with a stable income. Time cannot be stressed enough as well, I am a full time student with a job and i have to fight for time to care for my panther. Chameleons are jobs within their own and an additional to others one such as schooling and a job. Time will be your biggest issue if once you hit high school if your schedule is as difficult if you proclaim it is. I am in the top 10% of my class, however I am 5 years older than you. You cannot neglect an animal just because you do not have time for it. You have to look into the future and not just think in the now.

Anyways, back to original post.
I am considering getting a trio of pygmies due to the little space the take up. I think they max out at the most of like 4 inches or so and live in smaller size glass tanks. They do not have long life spans but they seem like a very fun cham to own.

And if you knew anyone my age you would say I was far more mature than they.
Being mature has nothing to do with resources you simply cannot make use of yet such as driving or being good at something immediately. Just because you can differentiate a function on paper does not mean you can take care of a living animal that can almost be just as demanding as a child, this is what you do not understand. Just because your book smart does not mean you have common sense, I am the top of my class and state and I know plenty of people that probably couldnt stick their finger up their own ***. Being 13 limits you a lot. These animals are expensive and a steady income is a big factor in maintaining them and keeping them healthy. I dropped 400$ on supplies for chameleon, plus another 200$ for him, and probably a few hundred more in food. Vet bills get expensive as well, most places will not hire anyone under 16 and I do not know of any 13 year old who has that much money to dish out towards an animal especially a montane chameleon who is even more demanding than moderate species. Think of how much a good mister costs, i do not have one yet and have still spent almost a grand. Mist kings are about 100$ and are the only ones really worth getting.

Guys - PLEASE keep this thread on topic with the original poster. He started this post to get advice, not to provide yet another avenue for this ongoing bickering. If you don't engage with the trolls, they will go away.

Just got a pair of thamnobates last week. They are truly amazing creatures.. They are pretty shy though.. When I go to watch them they get skinny and hide behind a branch.. Haven't even been able to get any good pictures yet lol.. Pretty sure my female is gravid also and hates everything except food.. Good luck with whatever you get though lol
