smoke from the fires... waiting for the zombies

Good luck @Beman and everyone impacted by the fires! I'm in Seattle and it's bad here like an orange-tinted nightmare. Last time the smoke was this bad it killed my guinea pigs who were already advanced in age but Xerxes didn't miss a beat. It's good not to need a ton of oxygen right now. This time I have an air purifier working overtime in a losing battle to just keep air quality in my home marginally better than hazardous. I'm most worried for my phyllomedusa hypochondrialis froglets. *fingers crossed*
It is crazy. You stay safe as well. I hope your froglets make it through.

I honestly don't think they mind it. Mine are 5 months old and kicked it outside during the super smoke orange days down here in Sonoma County. I'm not advocating that the smoke doesn't do anything but I'm not thinking its a major concern. Fire is natural after all. Mine were do much more pissed off that they couldn't get their sun and were confused if they should be going to roost or not lol.

Fire is natural?

Incoming necas thread about how americans don't blow enough smoke into their chameleon's enclosures

If the smoke is at dangerous levels for humans to breathe you don't think that impacts chameleons?

THE MYTH OF WILDFIRES UNLEASHED

wild fires: it has often been stated that smoke inhalation from wildfires is bad for the respiratory system of chameleon. But is it really? Let’s look at the facts :

1.wild fires have been happening naturally for over 350 million years

2. Approximately 30-46 million km2 burns annually around the globe

3. chameleons live on the globe

conclusion: wildfires are natural and can only be good for chameleons. The smoke inhalation will allow them to evolve into fire breathing dragons.

I suggest doing a controlled burn of your reptile room once a fall for most natural setups.

So there aren't wildfires ever in Madagascar? /

Are you really trying to make a point for how smoke inhalation is fine because it's natural? Come on now... especially for something with delicate lungs like chameleons. Natural does not mean good or safe for our animals or us. And to answer your question, I doubt wildfires the magnitude of what California is seeing are in anyway natural.

In a (predominantly) rainforest? :cautious:

I suppose it could depend on your definitions of "natural" and "wildfire".

No question there are forest fires in Madagascar, but the vast majority—if not all—seem to be intentionally set by humans. Is that "natural"?

Of the fires that do occur other than those initiated by humans, most appear to be due to—or exacerbated by—climate change. Is that "natural"? I think some would argue that humans still had a hand—if indirectly.

Just pointing out some facts. Wildfires are natural in many places/parts of the world, but I'm dubious about how natural they are (or were—historically) in Madagascar.

While we can't really canvass or interview them, I'm also dubious that any sentient creatures don't mind the effects of fire on their habitats—even those that have evolved coping mechanisms (e.g. digging in, fleeing).

But I could be mistaken or misinformed. If anyone has any data that wildfires are a periodic or regular natural occurrence in Madagascar, I'm willing to keep an open mind. ?

Um nailed it. Seriously though my house is about to burn down and these guys are starting to look at me like dude let's FUCKING go. Don't know how bad we were talking but I'm looking at orange have a fire 1 mile away and im outsie

At the same time we had a shit load of smoke I went on a Covid-19 Mexico vacation came back and my big guy grew so much it wasn't like handling the same chameleon. Little guy is still little and is legitimately in the Dwarf Panther club.

Well we are socked in again and it is hot as hell out... We have a heat wave at 81 degrees. Keep in mind 68 is high here on the coast where I am at. So Yeah I can't breathe and its hot as hell and we do not have air conditioning. SUCKS
