Snails- eggs from old colony HATCHED. NOW WHAT?!!!

After I offloaded my colony to a biology teacher I work with I found an egg mass. after about 6 weeks they finally hatched last night and now are trying to make their way into the world.

I found out the hard way that an aquarium is less than ideal t house them. Has anyone used a screen cage with success? Any recommendations as to a retail enclosure that could double as a secondary home to my panther while I renovate his enclosure?

I have ben told the Dragonstrand enclosures are good but pricey-
keep in mind I live in NJ and winter here is rough with only a screen cage. Should I get a hybrid 2 panels screen and 2 acrylic? The temp in the house goes down to about 60 during the day between Nov-March.

I live in MA and totally understand your struggle with temps, & humidity!

I have been trying to land on a design for Peepers big boy cage, and came across a thread/post (I do not remember where or I would give credit) but there was a suggestion for a cage that would convert from all screen to all acrylic! or any combination in-between! WWhhhhaaatttt.... I know ingenious idea!! So I am working on that, basically you would have acrylic panels that you could screw into place with a wing-nut. The idea is so simplistic it blew my mind that these types of cages are not offered on the market!

I do not know if you find that helpful, or if you are even thinking of building your own cage, but hopefully it helped a little :D

I house my snails in a clear plastic bin with a cutout lid that I glued screen into. I feed them the same wet gut load that my dubia and crx eat. I mist them every couple days to keep the substrate moist and they drink off the screen when its wet. They also have a gravel filled water bowl and calcium source.
You can feed them to your chams weekly or grow them up to full size and have an expensive french appetizer.

I keep mine in an aquarium and just provide plenty of ventilation and only enough food for them to eat in a 24 hour span. I don't know what you smelled/smell, my guys at worse smell like old vegetation and that's just when I clean stuff out. I keep moss in and have a benign substrate like eco earth. They also have a cork bark flat and a cuttlebone piece. I mist my guys every day currently, if I ever go on vacation that's when I would use the dish method because misting them is second nature.

The aquarium glass gets schmutzed up too fast, but if anyone has the plans for a custom enclosure or pics post them for me.

Right now they are the size of the lead tip of a pencil so I think just tupperware for a few months would be fine.

At this tiny size would bioactive substrate eat them?

It's weird I don't have a lot of leftover slime issues in mine... not sure why?

Live in Ma as well. What part?

I live in Maine and our woodstove killed the screen enclosure very fast it was just to dry, I have my Panther and veiled in the 36x18x36 Exo Terra's. I love them and they hold humidity and temperature very well.

I also keep my snails in a 10 gallon glass tank, with Eco earth and moss. They do slime things up, and smell kind of funky. I don't think they smell any "funkier" than red runner roaches. I super glued tulle to the screen cover and it helps keep the smell from entering the room. I also feed arugula, mustard greens, really whatever veggie I am feeding my other insects. Also there are a bunch of Isopods in there too. I also wipe the sides down once a week, they have grown so much in just a couple of weeks.

I like to describe it as: If you turn onto the dirt road, go through the middle of nowhere, cross "the sticks", then drive about an hour you will find my town lol

@Panthro413 Your in Holyoke!!! OMG your like 1/2 hour-ish from me, I'm in Greenfield!!!

Do you guys have different species of snails than I do? o_O

Haha, I have Helix Aspersa, you told me they were the easiest and you were totally right;) So far I love them, they do smell funky but not horrible. I can't believe how fast they grow:)

I have been wondering about snails for a while now... Do your cham's really eat them? What happens with the shell? Is it digested or "other" o_O

How big are yours? Do you have pictures? I keep wondering if I randomly got a weird species? Idk... My guys are smaller and don't have the super brown shell I expect from aspersa at least the ones I usually see around here.

Snails when fed at the correct size their shell gets digested and crunched up and has a huge amount of natural calcium.

I have some I can ship to you once they have babies. Though I now question which species I have lol XD

Currently I am trying to convince myself not to try and track down a leech supplier .____. there is one species that has stolen my heart.
