Everyone it is so irritating to see so many chams die from improper care! There is such a wealth of knowledge on this website and so many people dont use it. I hate to see chams die. Dont get me wrong there are alot of times its not the owners fault, but so many times it is and they ask for help at the last second and dont take there cham to the vet or dont listen to advice and post a couple days later that the cham dies. Plain and simple if a person cant properly care and give the time for a cham dont get a cham. There are plenty of low maintenance reptiles out there chameleons are not a low maintenance reptile I spend atleast 2-3 hours aday careing for mine and making sure there multiple feeders have food with clean environments. And taking the chams out for natural sun as much as possible to ensure optimal health. This is the way all keepers should be ( i have 3 chams btw and 1 outdoor enclosure so they got out separate) PEOPLE PLZ USE THIS WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE AND LEARN TO WATCH FOR SIGNS IN YOUR CHAM THE EYES ARE THE BIGGEST GIVE AWAY WHEN SICK MOST OF THE TIME

I think we all think the same thing, not sure there needs to be a thread to condemn someone for not being educated. The best recourse IMO is to take each case one by one and help as much as you can. In the end, the owner will either get up to speed and save a sick Cham or the poor animal dies. Not much else we can do as a community.

You can't blame general public for buying these animals. The issue is how accessible they have become. When an animal that requires such specific care and husbandry is sold in a cage next to green anoles and hermit crabs, novice don't see them as an animal that requires anything special.

In the early 2000's, veileds were still being sold for $150 a piece and that was a good price. Now $40 is an average price. There is no thought or commitment needed anymore to purchase these animals. So why do we expect that people are going to spend $400 on their setup? It doesn't work that way.

The real issue is the undervaluing of these animals. To many people breed for NO reason. This species is well established and doesn't need anymore breeding. Yet I see so many keepers wanting to buy pairs and breed them. Why? If you are willing to spend money and time to breed a species, put your effort into a species that needs help and needs work establishing. There are hundreds of species and we as a community have successfully established 2. We're rocking and rolling aren't we? When you overbreed a species, you have to sell them for cheaper prices to get rid of them. The average whole sale cost of a veiled chameleon is $8. That is what it has come to. Very pathetic. Newcomers don't understand the costs of raising a brood of chameleons. It is no small task physically and more importantly, financially. So people mass producing these animals are trying to get them off their hands as fast as possible.

So, yes...I see the OP's point of not wanting to see chameleons die from crap husbandry. But I get more annoyed at the people "rescuing" animals and thinking they are doing the right thing. If you have resources and you want to make a difference, put those resources to use in areas where resources are needed. I'm not saying that people are wrong for buying a PetSmart veiled chameleon. You will here that when you buy them you are allowing them to sell more. I don't see it that way. They will be replaced whether they die or sell the animal. It cost them $8. If three die and they sell one, they still made a profit. So I can't get behind that idea.

But all the people I see that declare themselves "rescuers" because they bought a veiled from PetSmart with MBD would shit their pants if they were present for an import. You would understand that the overbreeding of a species is much different than animals pulled from the wild that need proper care. My wish is that people would expand themselves a bit and get into more species because it would help them, not because they think they can breed a veiled and make some money......because trust me, you WON'T.

Jpowell you are much more experienced than me and i totally agree with all you have to say. Personally, I still like to stand by not purchasing chams from large chain stores and discouraging it. Even though it won't make a dent in their profits, one still does not have to support it. You could compare it to many other aspects of life. Either way we all care about chams and animals. it can be easy to get frustrated when we see how they are treated at times. It is a life and not a toy to be broken an disregarded so i understand why people get heated over subjects, i know i do.

Selfishness is way to often disguised as kindness and as being helpful! We humans need to start looking deep in the the abiss that we call our souls and start filling that void with the real stuff! I am way to often embarrassed to be called human! Oops, who pressed my "On" button. My apology I just turned me "Off" again! Sorry!

I didnt mean to act like a butt. I was just reading through post and kept seeing death at the end of alot of problem and it got to me. I agree i shouldnt blame people for buying them they are 1 of the most awsome animals out there. Just yesterday my mother calls me and tells me she has a friend that has a veiled and it just layed egg and the girl didnt know what to do so i get my mom to give her my phone number she calls and the first thing i do is ask if she knows about this site. The second i ask her why she kept her chams together she tells me her boyfriend wanted to make money so i tell her im sry but it is hard to make money like that and not good to try she gets upset then i tell her be ready you could get a second clutch coming she says well the first clutch was 54eggs (i gasp) in conclusion she is at a lost trying to give the eggs away for free
