So my cham died yesterday...

Patchouli died yesterday. I had a vet appointment for her because I noticed she was sleeping during the day. She stopped drinking and I had to force it with an eyedropper. Was soaking her, showers.. All that. Yesterday morning she looked REALLY bad, so I rushed her to the vet. She was black and gasping for breath. The vet said she was too far gone, so we made the difficult decision to euthanize her...

Thanks.. I'm still kind of in shock about the whole thing. She went from looking ok to pretty much dead in like 2 days... I'm going to get another cham eventually, but this time I'm going to wait until we have a house and I'm going to build a nice outside enclosure and a SUPER nice inside one and have everything all set up before I bring it home.

I am soo very sorry to hear about your loss I lost my baby Veiled a few months back when he choked to death in my hands; it was devastating to say the least!!!!! I still hurt at his loss and know how difficult it is to get past the loss. One day you will feel ready to try again and even though it is hard this will make you an even more attentive Cham keeper because you have dealt with a loss in a sudden manner. I think you should be commended for realizing that holding off until you can provide the best possible enclosure and care is important! Again, so sorry for your loss!!!!

We lost our very first Cham.
She was a baby veiled and the same thing happened.
She just went downhill fast and there was nothing we could do.

Yea, she was an impulse buy and I got her a nice Reptibreeze and 4 live plants and lots of vines and stuff to climb on. She wasn't healthy when I got her and I think that was the biggest part of it. Also she was stressed a lot I think because I was buying things for her cage and moving it around a lot, trying to make it perfect. Only thing I can do is learn and make sure it never happens again.

It's tough but sometimes we have to learn from our mistakes. If it weren't for our Barbra we may have never know why we were doing wrong.

Yea.. I want to get one of Chuck's chams from Heroic Chameleons. I REALLY love that white/blue combo. I plan on having the outside and inside cages and just have them decked out with misting systems, auto lights and everything.

well im glad to hear you were trying to make her environment as ideal as possible.

but im assuming a motivating force in that was realizing she didnt seem to be in good condition.

you said she was an impulse buy? buying from certain "pet stores" especially chain pets stores can be the worse thing you can do. it just promotes a cycle of providing animals in substandard condition, to people unprepared for the husbandry required. and even eperts have trouble bringing most of these animals back from the dead. many times i have seen animals that NEEEEEEEEEED saving and i have to fight myself to to waste an exorbitant amount of money on an animal thats about to die no matter how hard i try.

the fact that youre on the forums and were trying is testament to your devotion. nit picking, could have attributed to and inevitable death. but imo it was inevitable.

i hope your passion for these animals inst extinguished and we will see you around for a while

It's always hard losing a cham, I lost my first chameleon and I couldn't get over it for almost a week. All with definitely go well for you .

I bought her from a local pet store not knowing ANYTHING about chams. When I got home I immediately started researching how to take care of them. Joined this forum the day I got her. Since she has passed I have gone to that pet store and let them know the PROPER way to keep their chams, they need to be vet checked and all that. They are making BIG improvements to the way they keep their chams because I went over there and talked to them about it.. I didn't want her death to be in vain and maybe I can keep it from happening to another one. And thanks for the condolences everyone, really makes me feel better. I did the best I could by her and at least she lived the last couple weeks of her life getting to go outside and being loved. That brings me some comfort

Thank you so much for taking the time to assist the pet shop in improving their husbandry with the Chams they have!! The reality is that pet shops are in the business to make money and they do not have the ability/ desire to “investigate” potential owners to ensure they know what they are getting into. I do not think for one moment that people who spend the money on these animals intend them harm, but reality quickly sets in when they get the newly acquired animal home and realize just what is involved! I know it can be done cheaper than I tend to set up, but my last full set up for the Jackson ran me over $700.00, this would have come as a VERY nasty shock if I had been unaware of the investment beforehand!!!! The reality of it is that most people do not have this kind of disposable income off the drop of a hat to go out and buy it all at once, for this reason many of these Chams will die due to husbandry issues. This could be prevented if the people knew beforehand what would be required and had the time to save, acquire and put together BEFORE getting the Cham!!!!! I hope to one day own a breeding pair of top bloodline Panthers, however until I have the disposable income to handle the setup, maintenance and possible vet bills (always need to factor in when deciding to get any animal) I will enjoy continuing to view all of the gorgouse creatures on this site and spending the time (probably years) continuing to learn as much as I can about what will be entailed in this undertaking. After all, I have no desire to produce anything except top quality, healthy animals for others to enjoy. My problem will be that I will refuse sale unless I know for sure that the home knows how to care for them. I may end up with a bunch of babies staying with me
