Somene shot my dog

So Chris came home from lunch today to check on the baby chams and let our dog Mr. Miyagi outside. He heard him yelp so he let him inside. Miyagi was pawing at his ear, Chris checked but everything looked fine. When i got home a few hours later, there was a spot of what appeared to be blood on his chest. When I moved his fur away, I saw that he had been shot. There was a hole in his chest, but nothing was sticking out. I pulled his skin taut and was able to remove a pellet. We also saw a few on our back porch when we checked outside. If anyone knows anything about pellet guns, I would appreciate any input. I am not sure how far away they would have to be in order to penetrate his hide, so if anyone has ideas I would greatly appreciate it. I am soooo angry I could kill someone right now  Miyagi is my baby, I just don't understand how some people are so sick.

This is the hole after removal

These are the pellets we found. The one on the right is what I removed from him

Pellet guns can pierce skin, and can be lethal if they hit you at a sensitive spot, most of them are about a .22 cal gun, which is pretty safe, and used for target practise, but you can get larger calibur pellet fire arms, which can be used for small game hunting.

i have been shot by a .177 cal in the foot, it punctured the skin, and made a little welt like scar, but it wasnt bad. the pellets are called lead diabolo pellets, and the highest cal of gun is .25 cal i believe..

Your dog should be fine, dogs are pretty tough, my ex's dog was shot by a real gun, not sure what it was, but it shot right through his chest and the dog lived, was fine, just needed rest and a vet visit..

Im not sure about lead poisening though? Im also not sure if all pellet guns are lead..

Hope your dog heals fast :)

I hope he's going to be ok. He beautiful! It's so sad how people can treat helpless animals.

The pellets your dog got shot by appear to be .177 caliber, a standard caliber found most anywhere. Some of the more powerful pellet guns travel about 1200-1400fps, so if those pellets didn't penetrate so deep that they could be easily pulled out they were probably shot in the 800fps range, probably by a cheap air rifle or pellet gun. I would guess it were kids, because kids can easily get their hands on cheap pellet guns like those. Keep an eye on him, because those pellets are lead. I wouldn't have any idea how to treat for lead poisoning. He looks like such a sweetheart. Glad he seems to be ok, but keep an eye on him. Poor boy

omg that makes me sick. I would invest in some kind of camera or something to put out there. Whoever did that is really disturbed.

When I was in highschool we had a chainlink fence and I caught some kids throwing rocks at my dogs... needless to say I waited for the next time they came around with a paintball gun... Ever since they threw rocks at them my dogs hated anyone on bikes.

I'm really sorry to hear someone did that.

What idiots!! I hope your dog is able to recover from the wound fast and unharmful. It really makes me sick to think of the amount
Of idiots we have in this world. Unbelivable. Best wishes

Tell me who it was and I'll bring MY pellet gun over there... I dont use it enough so good practice on those retards :D

Words do not describe how angry that makes me. I am so sorry that some jerk hurt your baby!! I hope Miyagi has a speedy and painless recovery!

Whoever shot it could not be that far away. Since pellet guns don't go that far. Farthest I would suppose would reach across the street. Do you got alot of kids in the neighborhood?

Omg that's terrible. I don't understand why someone would do something like that to such a sweet looking dog. When I was younger one of my neighbors shot and killed our german shepherd puppy because he was "too close" to his pet pig. It takes a special kind of idiot to do things like this.
You said Mr Miyagi was pawing at his ear. Was there any injury to the ear too? Hopefully you find out who did this. Good luck and hopefully Mr Miyagi will be just fine.

Lisa I am so sorry your baby got hurt. Makes me want to get my hands on whever did it so I could show them close up how it feels. Hope your boy is ok. Best wishes for him.:)

Ummmmm....I cant believe no one has pointed this out, but, YOU NEED TO CALL THE POLICE ABOUT THIS.......IMMEDIATELY. PERIOD!

This is a very serious crime being committed by someone who is within line of sight of where your dog was shot/you found the pellets. It shouldn't be too hard for them to figure out who it was....hopefully.

Thanks for all the support guys. I am so freaking pissed!!

I filed a report IMMEDIATELY after and the sheriff sent animal control out to do an investigation. Unfortunately we live in a middle of nowhere rural town. They aren't really neighborhoods, just miscellaneous houses, trailers, bushes and cacti.

The animal control officer said it is unfortunate because in our county any type of animal abuse, etc is only a misdemeanor. He said to keep our camera handy and to get ready to take pictures of anyone with a pellet gun. They cannot press charges without actual proof like a pic, even if they know who did it.

I did thoroughly check the rest of his body and there are no other entry wounds thank god.

I was talking to Chris about this earlier....we moved out here a little over a year ago. I took a teaching job because I was sick of teaching in Detroit. Its amazing to me we survived living in downtown Detroit with no incidents but this happens here. We are in a gun toting hillbilly town, totally opposite of what we are used to. I just hope I figure out who this s.o.b is so s/he gets what they deserve. I will press charges to the fullest extent possible, though it might not be much. :(

That's absolutely terrible. :( I really hope Mr. Myagi is ok. Have you called the police already? If not, I really think you should. Someone who is willing to shoot a dog is really sick. I would call the police and report this immediately for your dog's safety and for the neighborhood you live in's safety. I really hope Myagi is feeling better.

Sorry, I posted before reading your update. I can't believe someone would do this to you're dog. Really makes me angry at humanity.

I would be so uncontroably angry if someone did that to Odin or my gf's dogs. Pellet guns can freaking hurt, and the right one can travel some distance. I never got too far into them, kinda skipped them on my way from BB gun to 22 rifle /22 shot gun but i know i have a friend that has a comp. type pellet gun that we have been acurate with to about 100-130 yards. If that happened with my dogs if be sittin on my roof letting my dog run in my backyard with my pellet gun and a good site waiting for whatever pecker head did that to come back and try it again!

That's horrible. Later in life karma will get that kid back for shooting man's best friend. I would also try and figure out who it was since you should be able to talk to parents in ur neighborhood and find out who's kid has a pellet gun.

Do you have a fenced yard? I know when we used to live out of town on 100 acres, people were known to shoot dogs on their property to protect their livestock. People had sheep, llamas, chickens, cows, horses, ect. If they were not familiar with the dog, it would most likely be shot. We immediately fenced our yard with chain link as soon as we moved in to protect our dogs.

Couldn't agree more. I have both the large and the small caliber Pellet gun, and the smaller caliber is 800 FPS. At 200 feet it will kill a bird and if hit in the right spot, kill a squirrel. I bought the larger one because I felt that taking more than one shot to kill a squirrel was less than desirable for the squirrel.

If you were able to easily pull out the pellet then this was either a lower velocity gun at close range or a higher velocity gun further away.

I will say that one thing to keep in mind when trying to figure this out is the cost of the gun. 700 and up FPS guns start getting into the 80-100 dollar price range. Just something to think about.

I'm very sorry this happened and I hope the little SOBs are caught. Do you know of any kids living around you? I still wouldn't discount an adult, especially a bored hillbilly/redneck of doing something like this. People will amaze you with their stupidity some times.

It happens more often than not....sad to say. We just removed one from a cat's leg last week.
And Pellets can travel quite the distance. I rememberthem going to our tree targets of about a football field when I was a kid. I am sure they are more powerful now.
For them to have been laying on your patio though...they traveled some distance.
As far as lead poisoning. No treating. Pellet is out and even if left in and made of lead will NOT cause any poisoning or long term effect.
I am glad to hear that cops were called. Ya misdemeanor. Some crap right. In the clinic sadly we see neglectful and abusive owners. You say something they put the animal down. If they get busted it is a slap on the wrist. Sad and not right.
Hope your dog continues to do well. Just keep the wound clean and dry and watch for redness and pus. If you see redness and drainage, go to the vet.
I suggest you always supervise trips outside with your camera and keep dog leashed until hopefully you find the creap.
