Species to start with

Hello!

I'm curious what kind off chameleon u guys advice me to keep as a freshmen/rookie/newbie.

I was thinking about starting with the veilded chameleon or the panther chameleon.

I'm also setting up ideas to build my own enclosure, could u check it out? Any tips/advices are extremely appreciated! > https://www.chameleonforums.com/building-my-own-96696/

What do you think would be wise to keep in this sort off enclosure? And Why?

Thanks in advance for your reply!

Cheers!

Welcome!

It sounds like you're on the right path with either a veiled or panther as your starter chameleon, as they are more hardy than other species and share similar husbandry. Looking at your blueprints for your cage setup, it seems as though you are more than capable of handling either/or. There are several different types of locales so you would be able to pick what suits you best. Plus, I do not know what is available in your area since you are outside North America.

i personally would prefer a panther but it would be easier to care for a veiled

Although I would generally agree with this, I would have to say if you do the right research and learn the correct husbandry, you would be just as successful with either. I did start with a veiled with the thought that they would be easier to care for, but the more I learn, I realize that there is just as much to know with them! Build an enclosure that could suit either species and when the time to choose is here you will know! ;)

Great! I'll just have to choose between the two of those.. I'm not sure what species are available in my country, I do know that the second of december, this huge reptile market is taking place not far away from my home. Want to buy my first chameleon at that market.

I know they offer veilded chameleons with the age of 3 months and older. But don't know if they have panther chameleon with the age of 3 months I only know about a few adult panther's.

I want to aim for a panther juvenile(male), with the age of 3 to 6 months( as they don't grow that old).

If my path doesn't cross this cham, i'll automatically go for a veilded.

Thanks for ur reply, and by the time, I'll let u guys know which one it has become.

Cheers!

:D Welcome to the forums. Just do lots of research until it's time so you'll make sure you are well informed one whatever one you pic. Learn the best husbandry and what a healthy one verses a sick one looks like also may want to try learning on how to sex them since a lot of breeders will mess up there. Especially with the panthers. Good luck.:D

Do u mean, The amount of info u need for the veilded is the same as for the panther? Or do u mean It's generally the same info?

Can't say yet if my enclosure is suitable for them.

The things I brought in my blueprint are based on the things I've red on forum, collums, topics and other sources off info.

Like,
- The ventilation
- The differences in hight
- The plant drainage system
- The humidity
- The warmth
- Basking places
- Places to hide

things I have to brainstorm about:

- What kind off background should I make? > want to go for schuttering plywood as main back. But how do I decorate that...

- What kind off plants should I use, non toxic, not harmfull for the cham and resistent to constant humidity.

Does anyone has ideas/info I could use?

Thanks a lot in advance,

And thanks for your reply!

Thanks! They will mess it up?

I'm trying to get as much info as I can get. Sunday evening started with gathering info, now already know way more stuff that comes in handy!

I've already gathered info about how a sick chameleon looks like, need to learn about sexing them though! Thanks for the tip!

Choose a Chameleon YOU like (most are fairly basic in their care), then research it's care and make sure you can replicate it's needs in your care and when you feel like you are ready get whichever you like.

Definitely the amount is the same. There are differences in each species, and you will have to adjust your enclosure a little for humidity, temp, plants etc., but the basic size and structure is sort of the same.

Alright, but with this kind off drainage in my future cage, It wouldn't mind to put a panther or veilded in?

The other species aren't common to buy in my arrea..

Good tip though! thanks!

That's good to hear, so just pick a species and adjust the cage to their needs :)

This is just my Honest opinion

I would say panther or veiled. It really comes down to how much money you want to spend.

A male panther can be about $250.00-$400.00...A female will be about $150.00-$300.00...It also depends on the locale you choose.

A male veiled will be around $75.00-$150.00...A female will be $50.00-$100.00

I would reccomend a veiled more because it's cheaper and just a little bit more easier to take care of (I've never owned a Veiled buts thats what I have heard).

Once you've had you first cham for awhile and think you've got the hang of it, you can start to add more (WARNING CHAMELEONS ARE ADDICTIVE :p).

But then again this is just My Opinion.

Hopes this helps you decide,
Sophie :D

Thanks! Every encloser helps me with how I want to build it. 200$ is cheap!

I want to make a little paradise as perfect as possible. I noticed that it comes with a different price..
