So... my drivers texted me late last nite to let me know that they've just caught about 5 stick bugs for me while out on their route. Bless their lil hearts! This is what I come in to find this morning:

It's nice that they're looking out for me, but imma have to educate them on the difference between sticks and mantis! Lol.

Btw, any idea as to what kind of mantids these are? They don't look like the Chinese...

i would take stick or mantis and say thank you to them. Never turn down a feeder. I all I can do is tell you they are mantids. sorry.

Oh, don't get me wrong! I did thank them and I will try to house these guys and see what comes of it. I was very appreciative. :D

Ha ha, love it :) - reminds me of being in primary school and all my little friends would run over and tell me they'd found an 'army ant' - I would have to sigh and tell them 'Not in Hull you haven't'.
Or when I was taking my first Green Anole home on the bus and an old woman said 'Aaargghh - what's that, a crocodile!?'

I had my semi-patronising 'Actually you're wrong, but in a funny way' look down by the time I was 12.........
Nice that your colleagues are helping you out though, they'll be a nice treat for someone.

Ha. Baby crocodile!

I remember stopping on the side of the road years ago to pick up a turtle that was crossing over. I was going to "rescue" it. I placed it in my lap and let him be. Being young and dumb (1st year of college) I started to taunt it a lil bit by placing a drumstick (not a chicken leg) in front of his face. He proceeded to bite the stick in half!!  He then shot his neck almost all the way over his back towards me, snapping and hissing! Turns out he was an alligator snapping turtle! He was sitting inches from my junk!!!!  We pulled over with the quickness and let his a$$ loose, on the spot!!!

Lol
Puts the 'I don't want to get bitten by that feisty dwarf hamster' thing I've been doing this week in our animal handling sessions into perspective........
I nearly bought a baby snapping turtle many years ago, but the filtering and heating water plus the huge size as adults made me rethink.
At some stage I will own a proper Crocodilian though

Good luck with that!

Btw, what is a good amount of time to wait before feeding these off? I heard 24 hours is adequate?

Thank you - need a license in this country :)
I never wait more than 24 hours for any wc thing (except terrestrial isopods), I don't think mantis are particularly bad for accumulating toxins. I would be happy enough with 12 hours, and a couple of gutloaded fruit flies or crickets.

Found a stick bug when I was on vacation in July . It was at the park my party was at . So , since both my chams were there , I put it in Winter's cage and my brother's girlfriend said " Isn't it illegal to kill them ?? " . I just looked at her and said " Hey , I just put it in the cage so Winter would have a playmate .... not my fault if she decided it was better tasting than it was fun to play with " .

*Ahhhhhhhh ... I answered in word form , not with a smiley !! I must be losing my mind !!*

Lol, nice playmate :). You could try telling that story in smiley form but it might be too much even for you to manage! :D

I had an escape green banana roach when i first got the batch. I told the family to watch out for it. I gotta say they found the weirdest green bugs with clear wings...

Feed those guys small crickets, just caught one similar myself. They are likely full grown adult males so house separately or they may kill each other. Not sure where your drivers found them but you should get the location, could be breeding grounds.

Small glass bottles, plastic bottles, don't need anything bigger then 8-12 ounces as you are going to feed them off anyway.

Great idea about a possible breeding ground. I know exactly where they located these! I'll follow up with this location in a day or two! ;)

I've already separated each mantis into separate cups. I'll try and feed one off tomorrow. :)

People around here still believe the old rumor that it's illegal to catch or kill a praying mantis. I always have to be the know-it-all to say, "Well, actually, it's not illegal, so can I have that to feed to my chameleon, please?"

Hmmm, I've never heard that before.

Sorry, officer, I'm not quite sure how that mantis ended up in my chams cage?? :D
