still at war with petco over mdb veiled, e-mail exchange

well here is what i sent the corporate, and this is what they responded with:

Message:i went into my local petco today (209 Falon Lane, Altoona, PA) to see a small veiled chameleon that was labled special needs and can no longer use its back legs. i was told it arrived very young and has been there awhile, and as an experienced chameleon keeper, i diagnosed it as mbd, metabolic bone disease, which is caused by inadequate care. they had no idea nor had taken it to the vet. i offered to buy it for a lower price than the 50% discount, but they refused and after i explained the disease, they said they would take it to the vet and would no longer sell it to me. i understand this is policy, but they NEVER mentioned adopting the animal. metabolic bone disorder is an irreversible disease, that chameleon will never use its back legs again, and selling such an animal for $45 is wrong, even though i have offered to give some profit because i know how to take care of such an animal. please contact me asap with any information on adopting this animal, i would really like to take it into my care, as the employees at this location are far from educated on chameleons, especially special needs ones which COULD HAVE been prevented.

Dear Amanda Hoke,

Thank you for contacting Petco regarding your concern with our store at 209 Falon Lane. We are sorry to hear about your recent experience.

We appreciate your concern about one of the chameleon in our stores. More importantly, we don’t want your perception to be that we are not concerned about the animals in our care.

Let me assure you that we have strict policies, procedures and training programs in place to educate and train our associates on how to properly care for animals. It’s our goal that our associates be as knowledgeable as possible so that they may be a resource to our customers.

I am sharing your concern to the appropriate upper management so we can help resolve this at store level. Before I do so, can you help me with your working contact number that we can share with the General Manager. We look forward to your reply and do accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

If we can be of any further assistance, please feel free to reply to this communication or call PETCO Customer Relations directly at 1-888-824-PALS (7257). Thank you again for contacting PETCO.

-i then sent them my contact number and said to call as soon as they contact someone

Well at least it wasnt ageneric response letter.

yea, im glad it wasnt too, or i was gunna call the corporate office a thousand times till i finally got to speak to someone :p i really hope we get to the bottom of this, theres no need for such ignorance.

I hope you can adopt him for free.
another member had the same issue.
bought the cham, we told him it had mbd, he took it back,
they took to vet. got some treatment started.
then they said we can keep him and refund you, replace him, or you can adopt him for free.
so he adopted him.

grr, if that was the case, i probably could have bought him for the $45 and brought him back saying it was mbd, and would have adopted him that way, would have eliminated most of this war, haha. but oh well..i took a look at their caresheet http://www.petco.com/assets/caresheets/lizards/Chameleon_Veiled.pdf and wow...they need SOMEONE with experience with chameleons to be associated with the store..so i replied again with this:

also i have found many things wrong with this caresheet http://www.petco.com/assets/caresheets/lizards/Chameleon_Veiled.pdf and for the betterment of the chameleons, would really like to help out in some sort of manner to keep this issue from happening again. if i can be of any help whatsoever, please let me know. otherwise, i would like to know how the current issue is being resolved within the next 24 hours. thank you.

but i hope theyre not too ignorant to ignore me...seriously, free help...not like im asking for a job there..and i dont think i want to work there anymore, id hate to have those coworkers -.-

Eh the care sheet could be worse.
i mean at least it includes the uvb bulb and supplements. and doesnt tell people to only feed dead bugs or mealworms.

yea, but its wrong about the supplements, the substrate, does not specify the kind of uvb bulb, the temps seem very high, and what the heck is a shed box? haha..but im just trying to make a point and win this battle somehow and prove to them they need me ;) and the sad part...they have mbd on the caresheet, and couldnt identify it in the store? bleck..

Damn I wish Petco would just quit buying & selling chams. They are not properly set up in their big box stores to adequately care for such an animal and their not going to change things for just one individual species. This crap has been going on for 15yrs or more and they still continue to sell these poorly housed on deaths door chams to newbs who have no idea that a chameleon shouldnt have bowed limbs and its eyes closed during daylight hrs.

I hope you can save the poor guy! As a community we all should write petco en masse and threaten boycotting the store and their supplies if they dont stop buying and selling chameleons. They make little or nothing from cham sales I dont see dropping chams affecting their yr end bottom line sales figures.

the sad thing is, this specific store has never sold chams until the past year :/

A shed box is a high humidity shelter (like a moss-filled plastic container with a door in it) a terrestrial lizard or snake would retreat to while shedding. Not anything a cham would use or need, and using one in a cham cage would be pointless.

Ive heard, I dont if its true or not. That the store managers generally have to order chams from the corporate office to be sold at their specific store. I know that one store near me sells them and the other one doesnt. The one that does at least keeps their veileds in the back in reptibreeze cageing. They always have the stupid wood bark chips in the bottom of the cage though. Ive told them numerous times to get rid of it and just go bare bottom because of impaction and they ignore my suggestions and say its for humidity. I said try misting more than once a day for 20 seconds, & get a live plant if you want to retain humidity....

I have visited numerous (so called) reptile stores! and after yet an other lesson in educating the owner have given up shopping in these outlets!!!! They have no concept/idea on how to look after sencitive creatures, so therfore i have given up with them, i will always try and educate thoes who want to learn and direct them in the right direction, and discurage the weak that buy from stores that know no better!

I personally have 100% intent to pursue these things once I am on the California BAR.

There are specific laws in place which REQUIRE pet stores to keep caresheets on all the animals they care for.

If you go in and ask them about it though....the employees have no clue what is going on. I "test" every petstore i go into, and I can't begin to tell you how many times I ask them about the caresheet for a veiled and they point me a panther caresheet..."its for a chameleon"...

and as you guys already mentioned, the caresheets aren't even correct.

I've been through something similar with them.. I've gone to war with them multiple times. They don't care about what a customer has to say. In that business, the customer is never "always" right... I had to give up. But I hope you don't.

PLEASE DO SO!

I dont understand how the government forces makers of products to strict labeling but undermine the more important aspect of CARE given by stores, breeders, vendors and so on.. They enforce and fine manufactures labeling improper images per product and improper listings of factual ingredients. In the end still give a flying @#$k about CARE given to living animals.

Naive thought here: I think just like a health inspector for the food industry. They should have an animal inspector for all registered breeders, vendors, importers/exporter, pet stores and or any persons buy/trading/selling animals. Way to many animals receive the short end of the stick because of greed and ignorance.

i totally agree, some sort of pet health inspector should be mandatory once a month at all of these chain stores, i think pushing it to private breeders is a bit far and people would go against it, but trying to start such a thing directed at chain stores first, would be a great first step towards the betterment of animal health. then, if that is accomplished, find some sort of regulations and such towards private breeders/traders and etc.

I was at a petsmart the other day. They were selling a "juvenile" veiled for $100. It was the size of my pinky if that. It looked like it just hatched. Do they think no one is going to notice these things?
