Strange Behavior

My Chameleons lights are on at 9 am to 9 pm but I have seen him going down to where he sleeps a couple hours earlier. Is this normal or is it a bad behavior.?

He must of been up parting like a rockstar :D Just kidding. I think it's normal my chams also go down a hour or so earlier then when I turn off the lights. My lights are on from 8am to 8pm

It seems the 8am to 8pm is a common time for the lights to be on. I changed the timer for the lights from 9-9 to 8-8 a while back. Some of them go down to their sleeping spot an hour or so early.

I hope this isn't too far off topic, but relating to the light cycles, is there any need to adjust the timing of the lights going on and off to the seasonal changes? The only time I've adjusted them was when the clocks go back/forward. But as far as the seasonal changes go does it affect the chameleons at all when the sun is going down at 5pm in the winter as opposed to 8-9 pm in the summer if the chameleons spend their time indoors (except for warm weather)? Sorry for the dumb question, but sometimes these things can keep me up at night :D

I too have all of mine set from 8-8. I also have a few that get in their sleeping position about an hour earlier. I have observed that most of my chams take their cues from the natural sunset coming in the windows. Which means in the winter they are ready for bed much earlier than 8 pm (more like 6 pm).

I wonder what time your cham is actually waking in the morning. Could there be enough natural light that would allow him to wake much earlier than 9am? If for instance he is waking at 7 am then 7 pm does not seem too early to be ready for bed.

i have switched the time to 8 am - 8 pm and I am asleep when his light goes on so im not sure if he is up before that, it gets very light in my room in the morn before then so im thinking he is getting up before his lights go on so he is ready for bed earlier. he does not actually close his eyes but just sits in his spot until lights out.

Some very experienced keepers I know cycle their times with what is their chams natural environment i.e. Madagascar times for panthers, etc. Maybe that's going a little overboard unless your talking first generation WC chams.

In my experience, I've seen that somehow the chams know the light cycles even without total window exposure to the outside. Generally, I would try to emulate what's going on outside. Like here in Texas, in the middle of summer it's light out from about 7 to 8:30 or 9. In the winter, it's 7:30 to 6:30 or 7. If your chams have window access, try to set it closer to what they are seeing.

As a general rule, I go 13 hours in the summer and 10 or so in the winter. It gives them some emulation of seasons.

In the summer time, it is warm enough for me to let the lights go off before the sun sets. 7pm (with sunlight filtering in his cage through an open window. (or closed if there is a chill wind)
He goes to his sleeping place according to the sun, making the slight daily time change adjustments naturally.
He wakes up to the sun and shortly after, his lights turn on.
