Stupid question, bash away!!

We all know that our UVB bulbs need replacing after 6-12 months, depending on bulb, BUT... has anyone ever inquired if plant bulbs need replacing? For example, will a 6500k bulb not be effective after that same time period?

Stupid question? Maybe, but the people want to know!

I guess when your plants start shriveling up and droppin leaves, it is time to change!!!:p Honestly, I don't use them so I don't know!!

I've never thought about it, but I would say no if I had to guess. I just need them for the visible light, so as long as they work I keep them. I don't think I've replaced any of my plant fluorescent bulbs in a couple years, unless they burn out. But no dead plants since I started using them along with the UV lights.

The guys at my "horticulture" store where I bought all of my lighting supplies told me to change the grow lights about once a year for optimum efficiency and plant growth. Otherwise plants may get leggy and not flower, etc.

Im pretty sure the spectrum on all bulbs degrade over time (as seen in UV bulbs and All aquarium bulbs)-- so as long as the spectrum doesnt matter to you, then it should be fine.

otherwise, change it when things start wilting!

ok now i'm curious...you mentioned a plant bulb? is this different from the uvb and a heat bulb? I have a 5.0 uvb bulb and a 75 watt heat bulb for my cham. and his plant seems to be losing a bunch of leaves lately...is there a different bulb that will increase it's growth?

Yup. A 6500k bulb should do the trick. I have 48" fixtures and bulbs. I believe you can get the fixture and bulbs for $20 at Wallyworld. ;)

Using a full spectrum florescent bulb alongside the UV bulb would help with plant growth

I would say drcrossfire has it right... I have a Reef tank that I use high output T5 bulbs on and they say to change the blubs every year because they will drop in spectrum... This is actually noticeable in my coral growth... To add to that the spectrum of the bulbs can also be effected by temperature... This is probably not so prevalent in the chameleon world (at least from what I have noticed so far)... But with my reef it is very important and the fixture I use has built in exhaust fans to pull heat away from the blubs...

First of all, if you are going to make a title like that, you probably should follow up with a stupid question! :p So, I will answer with my own stupid answer...Eleventeen.

Actually, I would agree with the yearly answer. Not backed up with anything scientific, but most bulbs will lessen in intensity after a few months, and with the plant bulbs the effects will not be as noticeable by you, but depending on the plant types (such as hibiscus that need a lot of light indoors) you will start seeing dropped leaves and flower buds.
