Successful pairing - so I hope!

My Panthers mated last night - which I'm thrilled about. This is the beginning of my adventure into chameleon breeding. Hoping to see some eggs in a months time! Red Bar x Blue Bar - both beautiful, healthy and friendly.

Question for experienced breeders: Is a second pairing necessary? Many of the articles I have read suggest a second introduction. Curious what the purpose of that is...to ensure successful fertility? Does it increase the clutch size?

With my pair, I introduced him to her again the next day (very carefully) to see how she would react. She immediately puffed up and started gaping. A female chameleon can know that she is gravid almost immediately after breeding. You can certainly try introducing him again if she is still receptive. If she is gravid, she will let you, and him, know. Good luck with everything.

Do you know exactly what the benefit of a second pairing would be though?

thats a good question. i want to know the answer as well. i have only bred my veileds once, and have heard this too.

As you stated in your question, this helps to ensure that the mating was successful and the eggs are properly fertilized. I have one female that I had to pair with my male 8 times over several weeks before she became gravid. She was receptive the whole time and each pairing seemed to be a success, but then she did not show gravid colors or act gravid toward my male.

By attempting to pair them more than once you are simply hedging your bets.

Please make sure to let anyone know getting the babies that they are a cross. Advertise as red bar x blue bar, not just as ambilobe.

Yes very, very important. You'll get black balled so quick if you don't.

I would never be dishonest or misleading. BUT in all fairness - even if you cross a red with a red or a blue with a blue - you CAN get the opposite coloration in any clutch. Just saying, there are never any guarantees.

Before I can think about selling babies and how they are advertised...I first need her to lay her clutch AND THEN successfully hatch them AND THEN successfully raise them. :) First things first.

In response to my initial question about the benefit of a second pairing, thank you for your response. When I got home last night - I took a look at her and she's already displaying different colours - more pink and purple rather than the solid peach. So I'm thinking she is indeed gravid. I did not pair them up again. I figure if it ups the chances of having MORE fertile eggs - I'd prefer to keep the numbers low. First time for both her and I so we will take it easy.

Thanks guys!

Pairing them up again does not mean MORE fertile eggs. It simply means that the chances that the eggs are fertile is greater. That being said, if she is showing more dark colors, esp. nearly black with peach highlights, she is gravid and another pairing would be a bad idea anyway. Good luck with the eggs!! It is a long wait, I am now just over 6 weeks in with 18-42 more to go.

Actually you are incorrect if the genetics have been kept pure. Now you may have experienced this in the past, but if it was the case, then it means somewhere in the line that the truth was not told or known.

If you breed a pure and known YBBB male with a female, you will not get random red bars.

I think that was Jungle fries point.

To your original question, I always place them back together to ensure that she was actually fertilized. It may take once, it may take multiple times. Continue to show them to each other until the female clearly denies him, that is when you will know for sure that it took.

HTH

Yes, I have a gravid girl! Thought I responded to this earlier guys.

In response to the genetics conversation, the bloodlines are unknown in my male as he is captive bred but his Pappy was WC. So my comments about having a mix of bars are correct, in my situation. Which is all I'm addressing in this thread. I'm not looking to educate the masses on genetics, which situations apply and don't apply, etc. I'm just talking about myself in this particular pairing.

OK but that's not what you said. You sounded like you were talking in general and that's not the case. Don't want the masses getting misinformed ;)

I said you CAN get the opposite colouration. Emphasis on the CAN...not WILL. Which is correct. Nowhere in that statement did I make it a final word on the topic. It is true, especially given the background of my particular situation.

I'm starting to feel frustrated with some members of this community. It seems like in a large number of posts from myself and other members - people are looking to criticize and pick apart what is said. In some cases, making incorrect assumptions and creating a level of animosity and frustration with the OP.

Why analyze every which way that my original statement could have been intended...? Why not just answer the question I came on here to ask and take into account my particular situation?

UGH! I know I'm not the only one who is feeling this way - I've seen other comments made. It's like some people are on here because they have knowledge to share and others are here to prove how much they know.
