My Cham has to get surgery to remove an abscess in his knee. Just wondering the success rate of chams going through surgery. He is a five Month old veiled. And he was a runt

Don't know about a five month old one. But I had an adult veiled who had surgery on an abscess on his side after being bitten by a locust. He made a good recovery. Will be thinking of you and your little one.

Thank you :'-(

Where are you taking him? Is it to a good vet who know chameleons or to a quack? If it is done by a qualified vet the chance of success is very high.

Negitivity is the root if all evil. I took him to ahloha. At least I can admit I was wrong, appologized and set the record straight. And what happened was unfair confusing and if it happened to you I wouldn't treat you any diff. Especially when you apologized to everyone and when this forum is full of senior members in some click and they cause so much drama over dumb things.

Ironically my veiled just went through surgery! https://www.chameleonforums.com/george-had-surgery-88480/

He's 5 years old, and that's the first time I've anesthetized a cham. A lot of chameleons do really well with surgery! There are always risks with any surgery though, and that applies to any animal and even people. Of course even with excellent vet care things can still unexpectedly go wrong. Try to find a vet experienced with reptile surgery to increase the chances of a happy outcome.

I would ask the Vet lots of questions as follows:

How many similar surgeries have you performed?
What is your success rate?
How much experience do you have with lizards and anesthesia (probably the greatest risk)?
What are the legitimate chances of something going wrong?

My regular animal vets will always answer those types of questions with no hesitation and are happy to bring in one of the other practicing vets for a second opinion if you ask. They are wonderful, sadly they don't do reptiles.

In my experience vets respond well to a reasonable line of questioning and expect it, and will answer you honestly. Nobody wants to be the vet that is known for losing animals so they should be very candid with you if it is high risk.

At this same clinic, Aloha (with Dr. Perez), I've gone through 3 surgeries with 2 chameleons and both did beautifully. He even did one of them free of charge.

I'm sure your buddy will be just fine, an abscess should be a quick procedure. I'll be hoping for the best!
