Any1 use the portable ones for their rooms? I need to get one and not sure what is the better one for my money. Any suggestions??

I <3 Swampies. For the most part they are all the same/do the same thing, they are very simple machines. Check out Craigslist you can usually find em for cheap.

My house runs on swamp and not AC, I have a portable one in my room.

The portable one can get the humidity up to a good 70-80%... but it only lasts 2 hours on high.

Bummer, dont want to run a hose through the house to keep you goin? :p

Oof, a hose running through our already cluttered house is not a great idea LOL! Some people tend to trip on things, and the last time we did this resulted in a very wet carpet. :p

Thanks all.....basically need it for my room.....the sun comes beating straight into it around 5pm and gets way to hot for my montanes......
Im hoping that it can lower temps down and get the humidity up.

I live in humid central florida and I use a homemade evap cooler on my greenhouse and a portable one in my cham room inside. It does work better in low humidity conditions but it still works in humid conditions as well. The portable one makes my cham room about 7-9 degrees cooler which isnt a whole lot but it also only uses 120 watts of power and only needs to be refilled once a day. Hope this

You could get a window unit. That way you can set it up for water and not worry about refilling like the portable kind.

For starters, if you haven't already, get some cover on those windows. Preferably a roll down sheet type blind. One that has no slots in it. You can always go ghetto and put tinfoil on they glass door.

After that, a simple 100 dollar unit should be fine.

There really isn't enough moving parts for quality to be an issue. All you have to worry about going out on you is the fan or pump motor. Both can usually be replaced. If not with factory equipment, rigging up any old fan and pump shouldn't be hard.

I've built one of these for a class project for my HVAC class. I've listed the parts needed for building one in a thread recently.. But in your case it would be much easier to just buy a little unit.

Man I really though the swamp coolers were from old old places. The only time I've ever seen one was at boy scout camp when I was a little one :p
