Taking Care of House

Hey Guys
Having to spritz cham but grandmother is complaining about water on walls and floor. What do I do to stop water from going every where?

You can use some sort of plastic to cover the sides of the screen cage. I've also heard that people use shower curtain or fish tank backgrounds. You could also think about making a drainage system. also try to spray from the top of the cage so the water won't hit the walls as much maybe.

I use a shower curtain but the one I have (not plastic) is not 100% waterproof so it will let water trough eventually if you spray on it directly for a longer period of time, on the up side it does stay wet a little longer so that helps humidity.

I have drilled a hole in the bottom of the frame my cages are on and glued in a small piece of garden hose that runs into a curver.
For some reason the water seems to drain way better when the hole is covered by the showercurtain as if it sucks the water to the hole...
Since my bottom isn't sloped towards the hole (hmmm...) that was a nice discovery.

I am going to be that guy that asks for a picture of what you are talking about because I don't know what a curve is and how the garden hoses are attached and how the shower yet in helps with the drainage. Thanks.

ill snap a pic when im home...

Curver is a brand, they make plastic household stuff and are known here for their storage boxes ... So in my country people will know that you mean a plastic box when you call it curver.

Ok... don't expect this to be mindblowing...

So this is how it looks, wat just runs out of the cage onto the board that i made watertight. The wallpaper is shielded by the shower curtain and the showercurtain is a little longer than the cage height so it ends up about 10cm under the cages and covering the drainage hole. (u'll just have to take my word on that, I didn't want to disturb my cham to remove the cage)
When I push the showercurtain behind the cages there will be a small layer of water standing on the board , when I have it under the cages and covering the hole there's next to no standing water... Looks like the water is absorbed by the showercurtain and then just falls trough the hole since shower curtains don't absorb very well... I dno, It works for me so I'm happy.(y)

Here's the piece of garden hole professionally glued into the board, the hole is in the back and the whole thing is tilted slightly so water runs to the back.

And here is it with the curver box to collect the water, just slide it under

I didn't want to disturb his basking!

Thanks for the pictures.

So does the shower curtain run along the back of the cages and then it continues down into the bottom of your cages? You mention "the hole is covered by the showercurtain" so it sounds like the shower curtain is also on the base. Or is it just a separate piece of shower curtain material at the base where the hole is?

Thanks.

Yes, It's 1 piece and it runs behind the cages and continues like 10cm under the cages.
The hole is like 8 cm from the back.

Make sure you have a drainage tray that will catch water that drips out the bottom. Heavy foliage inside the cage will catch much of the mist and keep it from going through the sides and even dripping down to the floor. I have used those heavy duty magnets, one on the inside of the cage and one on the outside, to hold the plastic on three sides. You can also fit Coroplast sheets into the sides of the cage. Again, the magnets can hold the Coroplast (basically it looks like plastic corrugated cardboard) in place or use zip ties or wire. I also have something waterproof like a rubber mat under the cages. You can also put the cages on a floor that will not be damaged by over spray.

I hope that helps because chronic dehydration is a huge problem with captive chameleons often causing kidney failure and early death. I would hate to see you not give your chameleon enough water.

As mentioned, it can very difficult to supply adequate moisture, through misting by hand. I'd employ a dripper, which will drop in one place and not spray outside of the cage, making it easier to keep the water contained. As others have pointed out, you can use everything from shower curtains to garbage bags, to cover the walls and floor or cover the sides of the cage. Personally, I'd humidity was ok, I'd prefer to tack up some plastic to protect the walls and floor and leave the cage as open as possible, for good air flow and temperature regulation.

I have a few pics of what I created last year for my current version of custom drip pans. I recently made an album that you should be a ble to see.
