the complex population genetic question.. and why no database on "pedigrees"?

I am curious, as I have dogs, yes I breed them... as a breeder I study population genetics, the development of breeds in dogs, and the limits of closed population breeding programs.. and Genetic health issues etc..

I love reptiles too.. I own only a few.. Don't have any plan to breed, but also very very much in support of CAPTIVE breeding programs.. for the pet trade..

but within captive breeding programs.. I do find the lack of any database to track what animal is bred to or related too this one weird :( why not??

some individual breeders keep excellent records.. yet TONS of animals nope nothing.. people using said animals in a captive breeding program.. and what happen when say a specific morph, or breeder has a LOT of success.. and sells a lot of offspring to some good, and some not so good.. or say the ability to import is STOPPED?? then what.. how do CB programs maintain genetic diversity??

Just curious..

ok I also have to say, as a complete NOOB on breeding chams.. but hey I am really into researching family trees compiling info. etc.. I was thinking it may be a kind of fun project :) anyone interested I LOVE to do so.. LOL.. . but that is a different thread.. :)

I agree. In the breeding of some animals someone or some agency is given the responsibility to maintain a "stud book". It would seem to me, at least with the less common species, we are ready for this.
