The deadliest feeder insect

U r right they r trained in kung fu, so much there is a style named after them. I agree they r deadly if u r on their food list. Maybe next time one comes in show him a sign of respect by bowing down to him before the fight and he may go away. I wonder though if they r like bees and can smell fear in people that is why they bother u. Great picture. As for me I love these guys. Love to watch them hunt, catch and eat it is very cool.

I'm not afraid of them, I just hate them because they always come at me.

I still laugh when I see that pic of the mantis!! I can sympathise with you, chamnovice. I feel the same way about craneflies too! I hate the way they fly up out of the grass when you walk past. Ugh! Then they fly at you with their nasty legs trailing behind them. I've nicknamed them 'flying spiders' cos I hate spiders too!! I had one in the car with me one summer - totally freaked me out! Lol! Ugh, they are nasty - at least the mantis is quite nice to look at!

ok, ok, you are not alone.

yes, mantises can and do attack people at times.

in upstate NY, when I was a kid, we used to stay at a place for the summer, since it is cooler then in the city.
I used to see a type of mantis that was different then that photo from time to time.
they never attacked me. but they hatred my father.
I still think it's the type of cologne or smell that my father put off, as to the reason they would attack my father.
me? I smelled like a dirty kid who played in the forest and catched bugs and frogs. they must not care for little kids who smell like mud and dirt.

but my father's aquavelva aftershave is what I think they hated.

just my thoughts,
Harry

hahah! whaaat?! thats f***ing histerical! if i was younger, i would so release a few dozen in a toddler school and get all the kids freaked out. these things really "start" with humans? haha

Oh no.... I just stand there, and they attack, the attack becomes much worse if you fight back. They're just out there pickin fights.
And they're pincher mouths hurt.

Thank you

Wow, that's funny, I never realized that they could be so aggressive. I've run across them a few times, and I've never even been "threatened" by one. A couple years ago one of them was crawling around on the hood of my car, and I just picked him up and put him on the ground without any problems.

I'd never heard they would actually attack people before. Oh well, live and learn!

Looks like a Chinese mantis. They were introduced here a hundred years or so back and spread like wildfire (they were meant for pest control, like Cane Toads in Australia  )

I love those little guys, very cool. They're even up around this way if you can believe it.

You can order oothecas online for relatively cheap, and they are great insects for feeders.

I'd probly keep some as well - I got 5 giant asian mantids - but they are pretty boring looking. I think the one in the picture is well pretty, not come across any like that for sale where I am.

I don't think Chamnovice took the picture. It is a common picture found on quite a few websites. It is a very cool pose.

Mantis deserve respect and are great creatures. I cringe when I read that people just kill them because they are afraid of them or don't like them. They do a great service of eating many different kinds of harmful insects.

In addition they make great pets. Every summer as a kid I would keep one as a pet and enjoyed feeding it things on a string. I would tie flies and bugs to a string (even lunchmeat) and it was quite an interesting (if not strange) hobby.

My favorite most friendly mantis finally died after she laid an ootheca. The next spring the babies hatched and there is nothing cuter than fierce looking tiny mantis babies. I released them to go forth and eat aphids.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who kill wild lizards in their yard just because they creep them out. But all creatures deserve respect.

I think they are soo cool:D. I had one around my house for the past 2 summers. She would just sit on some of my larger flowers or on the house. I assume she was female because last summer I even found about a 3/4 in baby wandering around my flower bed. I was going to feed it to my cham, but after walking around with it in my hand for awhile I then decided it was too cute and turned it loose. :p

Wow.. I just came back to check this thread, more responses than any other thread I've started. That is correct I did not take this picture, a friend of mine e-mailed it to me, I have no idea who took it or I would give them credit. It is a cool pose, and I felt I should share it, along with the story of fighting mantis. The pose fit the story to well.

This entire thread is a freakin trip. I've laughed myself to tears by the end. We don't have mantis in this area, so I guess it makes it more funny??? I want to order some just to get the experience!!!:D

I'm glad you enjoy the thread. Be careful if you order mantis, you may just get attacked when you open the box, they'll outnumber you and know they have the advantage. I have never faced more than one at a time. I am not sure what your results would be, hopefully you would survive.

Hahaha

I have 4 Mantids and have yet to be attacked... i feel i am missing out on something!

Here is one of my little girls
