The effect of health on coloration

We have a beautiful (IMHO:)), large Sambava male. When we first purchased him on February 10th (he was reportedly 15 months old), he had a small burn on his left side that was beginning to ulcerate, a coccidia infection, bleeding from his vent, and then he prolapsed. We could tell when we went to pick him up that he was not well, but the only visible signs at that time were the burns and an odd coloration (so odd that it was difficult to determine whether he was Sambava, or some cross morph. He was actually being marketed as an Ambanja, but we knew he wasn't that because of the good "U" stripe. Even though he had a lot of blue/blue green in his color).

He was listed on Craigslist as a healthy adult male. We didn't know in advance that he had any health issues, but once we saw him we could not leave him with the current owner. The owner wanted $300. Believe it or not, even after we pointed out the infected burn, the owner WOULD NOT come down on his price. So, we purchased him.

After some vet care and treatment for coccidia (his last 2 fecals, taken 3 weeks apart, have been clean), he is now a vibrant, self confident Sambava. Here are some before and after photos. He "fires up" red, black, and banana yellow. His resting colors are good strong traditional Sambava red stripes on green background.

I am not suggesting that health issues actually change the coloration, but more likely the chameleon "feels" sick and so his feelings/emotions depress his coloration. So, initially, he was showing stress coloration.

These photos are from shortly after we purchased him on February 10th (sorry the body shot is not real clear, we were trying to take as little time as possible to minimize stress.):

Here he is sometime after we purchased him. He is about to shed. You can see the black scars from his burned area on his side. He's had 2 more sheds since this photo. This photo was taken about midnite while he was sleeping.

Great work Gesang's! He loooks gorgoeus. It's nice to see hard work pay off.

I'm really sorry I turned you guys onto that seller. I hope it didn't cause you too much trouble. I'm glad he went into your hands.

I forgot that you contacted us about that guy. Really, we got some great chameleons from him. The Sambava, a blue bar ambilobe, a blue bar ambanja female, and a blue bar ambanja male. I believe we paid $300 for each one. Which, if they had been healthy, is a good price for young adults. The vet bills weren't too bad, because the vet treated 2 chams as 1. All 3 males had health issues, but turned around nicely. The blue bar ambilobe male just mated with a blue bar ambilobe female from Jake (Westcoastchameleons)! So, we are very excited about that. We already have recent eggs that were sired by this Sambava male, mated with a large Sambava female we have. So, it has really turned out to be a blessing.

Great job getting him back into fine shape! It's always good to see a success story on here!

What a breathtaking difference, you guys have done such a great job with him! I do believe that a chameleons health is/can be displayed through coloration. I have a Nosy Be, Vega who had an abscess sealed in his mouth last week. I knew something was wrong with him immediately when he was much darker and unhappy because of the lesion, and sure enough after the procedure he remains his bright beautiful colors!
Notice how dark he is in this pic, even his bar is gray:

This is how he normally looks:

He looks wonderful! Good thing he ended up with you! You're probably correct about a chameleon's "feeling sick" depressing his/her coloration. I know if I were a cham, I wouldn't have bright, happy colors with a big burn on my side!

Gesang well done for helping the chameleon. You can see how sick and stressed he was with that bizarre colouration in the first photo. He is very beautiful now, the difference is amazing. I believe 100% that chameleons show sick colouration, I have seen it with my own ones.
Ibesok, your Nosy Be's before and after photos are amazing too!
