The right UVB?

I’m so confused on what the right uvb is for a Panther Chameleon? I definitely think it should be a linear flourscent tube. Would Reptisun T5 10.0 be too much? Would Reptisun T5 5.0 be to little?? Help

Hi, too my experience, it always depend of your cages (big enormous cage and far uvb point should be at 10.0) but regular cages 5.0
You want to avoir a too heavy sources of uvb because too much of uvb can lead to a degradation of the D3 and can lead to a MBD

So t5ho 5.0 is really good for a panther

5.0 should be sufficient, 10.0 can work well in some sotuations... I think 90% of the times 5.0 is ok, 10% of the times 10.0 can work if there's a lot of foliage between lamp and animal for example.


T5/T8 is good, if you can get your hands on arcadia I'd buy that before reptisun.

Oh, I don’t actually have a chameleon yet, I’m just trying to make sure I know everything before I actually get him. He’d probably be around 8-14 months when I buy him

Sure it would, just buy the 24" light.

You best make sure that the UVB lamp is the right distance from baskingarea and thus close to baskingspot. As he will be basking for quite a while everyday he will get UVB at the same tim(it's what he'd expect anyways).

A good way to make optimal use of the UVB light is by using a reflector over the lamp. (Even tinfoil would work)

T8 are not that good actually, I tested it today and past 15 cm the uvb output is near to zero

I don't know what kind of lamp you've tested or what equipment you've used to test it or what the age was of the lamp and I'm also not planning to argue about it as I have not tested anything ( i don't have these pricey meeters) but from various sources I've read distance t8 8-10" t5 12" - 14", replace lamp every 9months.

I know, i was surprised myself with the poor output of theses light.. i also test a lot of bulb like solarglo, powersun, sunray, t5ho 5.0, 10.0, t5 etc

The only "good" one was (i order)
-sunray (super stable.. 2 year with the same bulb, same high output)
-t5ho (5.0 and 10.0) awesome output up to 1 year (we can probably fit Arcadia up to this one)
-solar glow (good! go far too but.. after 5 moth lost)
-powersun (good.. but some of the brand new lamp have no uvb at all.. i assume they got a factory problem, zoo med refund me my $ and mail me two other lamp for testing)
-exo terra curly bulb (100-150-200) actually a was really surprised.. lot of people told me this is the worst bulb ever
-t8 = cloudy/rainy day 24/7 at 6 inch, be sure you provide D3 vitamin supplement if you use this one
-reptisun (well.. brand new you can't expected your animal to got something valuable from this bulb, the screen block everything..

i tried with solar meter 6.2 and a crappy unit from amazon (who is actually not so bad!)

My t8 was brand new.. but.. is this a factory problem like the powersun? who know because exo-terra got the worst customer service in the entire planet! the solar glo and the curly where in the same line actually.. same output

Curious to hear what readings you got on the solarmeter, I use a reptisun 10.0 on my female Panthers cage, t8 arcadia 12% on my Parsons cage, and my Male Panthers have an t5ho arcadia 12%(I think, might be the 6%). I test with my solarmeter once a month.

I use a solarmeter 6.5 and have tested the 36 inch T5 Arcadia 6%(at various ages), and the exoterra sunray (70watt). The sunray was a bit strong for a couple months(before I got my chameleon) giving readings of about 8-10 at 6-10 inches. This dropped to 5-7 after a couple months, and now 2 full years later, it still reads 4-6 at the same distance. My T5’s read at about 2-4 at about 6 inches, and after a full year they still read 1-2 on the meter. All these readings are through metal screen. And as a reference, full sun at noon in my backyard (at 95 degrees), it reads roughly 3-3.5. This is unobstructed sunlight in Northern California. The meter is expensive, but worth every penny.
