THE scariest hour of all time!!

I cant believe he did this!!!

So yesterday, my boyfriends family was having a benefit party for his mom... so we decided to bring our reptiles with us to get some sunlight. We put our animals in the outdoor fence cage thing and we just put Cheery (the mellers cham)on our shoulder like normal. But he kept going to the ground... so we just let him walk around a little. Well i decide to go over to where the party was going on and my boyfriend stayed to watch all of the animals so the little kids dont go over and start poking at them. Welllll.. Nick decided to run and get a drink really quick- it was seriously only like 4 minutes...and when he got back, Cheery was missing!!!! So we didnt think he would get very far in 4 minutes... but we ended up looking for him for over 1 hour!!. where we were, there where a couple trees which we knew cheery couldnt get up because the bark was so spread out on it, it would take him forever to get up... then we thought to follow this little path that cheery kept going down, but he wasnt there...then we thought the only thing left for cheery to go was across this tiny stream of water into the thick bushes (which i prayed he didnt) So I was just watching to see if any of the tall grass over there was moving around, and nick went over and dug through all the thorn bushes, we were so upset because we couldnt find our baby anywhere.... then nick decided to go check out this tree about 20 feet from where we were, and there he was,.. sleeping on the end of the branch!!! We couldnt believe he crossed the creek, went through the thick weeds and got sooo far from where he was!! but nick climbed the tree and got cheery down. cheery actually stood out quite a bit because he had his sleeping colors going on. he got his tail hurt just a little from when nick climbed out to him, but he was perfectly fine!!! goes to show, NEVER leave chameleons unattended for even 3-4 minutes at a park!! The worst experience I have EVER had with that little monster!!

Glad that Cheery is o.k...these kind of stories scare me.... i am holding my breath and waiting for a good outcome as i read!!:)it still surprises' me how fast these little critters can move when they want to!!:eek:hope he is well after his little outing!

Phew! What a day! You must be so relieved to have found him! Chams are like little children and husbands in a shopping centre - turn your back for a second and they've disapeared!:D Glad you had a happy ending and he's safely back where he belongs. :D

Know what you mean about husbands and shopping centers....LOL:D add children to that mix and you have it all!

Had the same experience a few weeks ago with my Mellers Asmar - It was amazing how fast he disappeared. I found him a week later in a huge tree that was close to the trellis where I had left him basking. NEVER again!!! My nerves can't take it. So Glad you got Cheery back - and in an hour and not a week!!!

holy crap!! im so glad cheery didnt do that!! well... if it ever does happen again, chameleons stand out alot in the dark so it would be easier to find them. night time has its advantages! :D

YAY! GO YOU! Excellent news! I can't imagine what you went through! I'm so glad Cheery is back in your loving care!!!

ps. I love the name Cheery!

I am really very happy everyone keeps getting the chams back when they wander off, BUT could you guys watch those chams a bit closer? They are just like a kid, YOU are responsible for their well being and safety, please take that responsibility seriously. All of us need to be aware of our animals at all times, it only takes a minute for a lot of regret and heartbreak. Being safe should be a given, not an option.

Sorry for anyone I offended but everytime I read one of these posts I worry about the cham that won't be found, don't let that be your cham.

I know how you feel Laurie! These creatures are so wonderful and precious. I would never let my chameleon out of my sight, not even for a few seconds! Amy can run like the wind when she wants to (usually to get away from me, lol) so I wouldn't dream of leaving her unattended, not even indoors. When Lily had outside time I was always holding her or had her sat on my shoulder. If I was busy, then she would go in her outside cage so I didn't need to worry about her wandering off!

I haven't (touch wood) lost a cham outside, but I can imagine how awful that feeling of panic would be. Having had one die, I think it may be far worse imagining what could happen to an escapee! I don't think I could live with myself if I managed to 'lose' Amy through my own actions.:(
