I understand the importance of setting up basking spots and perches a certain distance from the heat bulb to prevent burns, but how do you prevent your chameleon from wandering all along the screen and hanging out in these restricted areas??

Bigger cage, more vines, more foliage. They will eventually learn(by eventually I mean pretty fast) that these restricted areas are bad. My cham used to do this all the time and climb on the screen and ceilings but doesn't ever anymore

Raise the lights up off the top of the cage.

well not all chams will do this. But if you find that yours are it's because they are trying to get warmer. Chams like all reptiles know what there body needs. Try using a light stand or something that you can hang the light above the screen so its not directly on it.

simplest is the best way..raise the lights..if the basking spot is cool, the raise a vine...

Thanks RobG. It's good to hear that someone else experienced this. I am not sure that it's a temperature thing, I really think he's just a bit nervous. I will play around with the lights to see if I can move them away without messing up the overall temps too much. Maybe raise the whole cage up a few more inches so he'll be a little higher? (Right now the highest perch is slightly above eye level.)

ive had cages low, ive had cages high..that wont change anything, your cham is just investigating his\her home..raise the basking light off the top (your cham can burn its feet) then if the cham is climbing on the ceiling and basking there, raise a vine up closer..pretty simple fix, not as complicated as some seem to make it..should take you five minutes

I think it might be partially due to if you have a younger cham, seems that they have a lot of energy and wander the cage, climb on ceiling and screen, ect. hopefully ur baby will grow out of it(I'm assuming its a young cham correct me if I'm wrong)

Raise the lights up off the top of the cage.

This is really the only way to do it... More foliage and more vines are great but not a sure thing... They will do whatever it takes to get the heat they desire and get the climbing room they yearn for... I have turned one cage into a complete jungle with a 3 ft. Umbrella plant, pothos that extends all 4 ft. of the cage and over 20 ft. sticks and vines and Stanley will STILL climb on the cage screen to get where he wants to go... To ensure no burns will take place you must elevate the lights off the screen

I think it might be partially due to if you have a younger cham, seems that they have a lot of energy and wander the cage, climb on ceiling and screen, ect. hopefully ur baby will grow out of it(I'm assuming its a young cham correct me if I'm wrong)

Yeah, he's a juvenile You get kinda nervous watching these tiny guys hanging upside-down, lol.

What temp would cause a burn?
