So five years ago we found a baby turtle (Sulcata Tortoise) in my pool. My sister was visiting from NY and she wanted to take it with her. Five years later she returns for a visit, and she has gotten huge! She only weighs 10lbs but she will grow to be 70-100lbs.Shes very friendly.

Well she was the size of a quarter when we found her. She was just floating around the pool.

Was there water in the pool when you found him? I'm no tortoise expert but his shell is much darker than the sulcatas I'm used to seeing and he doesn't seem to have as much upturned edges of shell. Are you sure that's what he is?

Yeah, were sure. My sister that took her verified it at her job with coworkers. She's a Vet.

I have 2 sulcata's. They are the sweetest lil things unless they get ya. Hopefully you know what I mean by that, they don't startle well . He is a handsome boy. My girls are only 4 lbs right now. Can't wait till my lil chams can have their own pimp ride too!!

Unfortunately it appears the vet who IDed your tortoise for you didn't know what they were talking about because that is not a sulcata but rather appears to be a Gopher Tortoise.

If you look at your tortoise, it has a nuchal scute (see this diagram to see what I mean: http://startortoises.net/shell-scutes.html). Sulcata tortoises do not have nuchal scutes (example: http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs49/i/2009/230/4/0/Geochelone_sulcata_by_FeralKid.jpg). Gopher Tortoises, on the other hand, do have nuchal scutes (example: http://cdn1.arkive.org/media/44/44C...tortoise-head-partly-withdrawn-into-shell.jpg).

So you know, the Gopher Tortoise is listed as a Species of Special Concern in Florida so having it is illegal.
