tightening rivets?

what is the best way to tighten rivets on the doors and panels of aluminum screen cages? I have used pliers to squeeze them to frame but it is a temporary fix. Due to constant opening over the years they have become quite loose and do not hold door closed. I am referring to the ones that hold the flip latch

If it does break off just go find a manual rivet gun and replace it. Not sure how you tighten them though.

none have broken off and none are close to breaking off. I would think that with all the cages out there that have these that it would be a problem many people would run into - can't imagine I am the only one It's a pain in the butt

Rivets will relax a bit over time, however when mine get really loose I find that it is the plastic on the little knob thing-a-magie that has worn away after consistent use. I usually inject a bit a shoe-goo into the gap to create a little more friction. Shoe-goo will dry hard but once you work it a bit it will remain pliable and give it enough hold to hold the doors firm again.

maybe try wrapping a small rubber band around the gap

shoe goo? is that what it is called? where do you put it? b/t the latch and the part of rivet closest to frame or b/t latch and part of rivet farthest from frame (did that make sense?)



dank, thanks, but don't want to do be dealing with lots of rubber bands (will probably break, get yucky, etc), I have three cages this has happened to and I am in them daily.

Here yea go… you can get it at just about any wal-mart, home depot type store… Just put a bit between the frame and the nub to help create a bit of friction keeping the part in place better. This stuff is basically liquid rubber so when you dab it in use a little then rotate the part to work it in.. Let it dry in the closed position and you are good to go… If you get what I am trying to say… PM me if you don’t get it… Or feel free to call… 702-565-4328
