tongue length?

What's the general consensus on the distance chameleons can shoot their tongues in relationship to their overall length? Because I just watched my habanero snipe out a cricket that was definitely further away than his length (snout to tail tip, not vent). I never saw my veiled shoot that far, Pretty cool!

I read the same.thing but felt like it might be exaggerated somewhat...now I'm not so sure, because habanero is only 2.5 months old and he shot it at least two or three inches longer than he is, which is pretty significant for a cham only around 6 or 7 inches long haha

Chris Anderson would know for sure but I've always heard one and a half times the length of their body.

amazing, isn't it? lol
I have my 3 month old Ambanja in a 18" wide cage, and he was more than half way across the cage and tagged a cricket on the far wall.

^^ this is what i have heard also.

Sounds about right for what I saw. It seemed to take him a couple extra seconds to recover afterwards haha like he was reloading his tongue

yes i agree with the 1.5x and i have noticed that younger chams seem to shoot further than when they get bigger, dunno why just seems that way

Since I'm sometimes working with dead chameleons, too... most tongues are just 1x the length of their bodies (including tail). 1,5x seems to be a bit too much. But nevertheless, that's an amazing length for a tongue ;).

i've seen mine shoot ~2x their lenght i'd agree with that

Most of the literature says that they project their tongue up to either 1.5x or 2x their body length (SVL). This is quite generalized however and it does in fact depend on the species and individual. I have a manuscript in review at the moment that looks at the scaling relationship of the chameleon feeding apparatus and once that is published it will shed light on that further. I can say that I have high speed video, however showing feeding events at 2.25x SVL in some species.

Wow, I'd love to get my hands on a copy of that once you publish! They really are impressive little creatures.
