Tongue misses about 10% of the time and hits cage. Harmful?

Hi, I just received my veiled chameleon about 3 weeks ago! I love him so much and named him Mojo! He has recently grown the courage to eat in front of me. The crickets alway climb up the screen and Mojo will either crawl on his vines or on the side of the cage and gobble them up! However, about 10% of the time, he will just barely miss the cricket and his tongue will nail the cage but he will immediately try again and will always succeed at least the second time. The cage is aluminum, and I am worried that it may damage his tongue. I would love any advice I can get!
Here is a basic care sheet:
Chameleon: Male, Veiled, 3-4 months old, my care for ~3 weeks
Handling: Never have and don't really plan to unless needed.
Feeding: Currently feeding around 10-12 crickets a day and recently added a couple small mealworms every other day. Crickets are gut-loaded with Flukers Gut Load, Flukers Quencher, and a little fish flakes. I feed him 3-4 crickets 45 minutes after him waking up, and the rest at about 5:30 pm after wrestling practice.
Supplements: I dust the crickets I give him at 5:30 with Repti-Calcium w/o D3 and replace that with the one with D3 on Tuesday and Friday. I dust them with Reptivite once every 2 weeks.
Watering: I manually mist him thrice a day for about 2 minutes each and he laps up a little every time.
Fecal Description: Feces has normal coloration and consistency. Never been tested for parasites but he is captive bred.
Cage: 18x18x36 aluminum screen cage.
Lighting: 60w Heat Bulb. 18" Reptisun 5.0 both lights on 12 hours and off 12 hours.
Temperature: Lower-72 Middle-76 Upper-80 Basking Spot- 85-90. Lowest overnight is around 68-70. I tested with a digital thermometer and standard thermometer.
Humidity: 50-60% using a mist bottle. Measuring with a standard hygrometer.
Plants: A lot of fake plant and vines that he likes to climb and hide with. 2 small live plants growing at bottom.
Placement: Mojo isn't anywhere near a place that will alter his temperature. He is in my bedroom, which I'm only in when I sleep. I do have a very large fish tank on the other side but I doubt he can see it. He is also placed high on a table and half of his cage is above my eye level.
Location: In the valley of Arizona.

I hope you guys can help me out because I want the very best for my Mojo!!
Also, if you see something that can be fixed with my setup, please let me know!
Thanks!
-Kevin

No, missing on occasion is normal. Your set sounds good to me. Might want to up the humidity a tad but that's about it.

Give him some time to practice. Your cham is still a baby! Can't expect them to be crackshots straight outta the egg ;-)

Chameleons typically do not miss. If they do miss, re-evaluate your gutloading, and supplementation. He could be missing from many things, like poor nutrition, calcium deficiency, or injured tongue to name a few. Hope this helps, but in general Chameleons do not miss. Fish flakes are not recommended as a gutload and I would change up your gutloading practices from what you have listed. Feed things like Kale, collard greens, mustard greens, carrots, squash, and hemp seeds. I also have a product called DinoFuel that has all kinds of Organic super foods in it.

You need to chnage your gutloading.

Fish flakes, not a good idea.
and the flukers stuff is ok, but not ideal.
you want to feed fresh fruits, veggies, seeds, greens, etc.
read sandrachameleons blog on gutloading.
Also, you are giving too much d3.
they need d3 every 2 weeks, not twice a week.

I had the same issue with my guy missing his bugs when he aimed sometimes.
I started using repashy all in one supplement, and no, he never misses a bug!

Up the gutload with sandrachameleons recipe or bug burger and switch to repashy all in one or at least up the Reptivite a little to give him some more vit A.

I am also starting a Arizona Chameleon Keepers group that I am hoping will meet 8-10 times a year. Let me know if you are interested if in the phoenix area.

Thank you!

Thanks to all of you! Again, I'm taking all of the advice I can get my hands on and all suggestions are appreciated.
I will change the gut load immediately and also the supplementation.
I will continue to observe Mojo's eating and will let you guys know how things work out!

Dont expect a quick fix.
It took Kink almost 2 months before I felt comfortable enough to say he wasnt missing when he aimed for food.

You can get the repashy all in one calcium plus (for geckos) off their website.

missing more than once a week should be considered a problem.
I would improve the gutload, reduce the frequency of D3 supplementation to once a week max, and lower the basking spot temp a little. Increase water a little. Adding a few more prey choices wouldnt hurt either.
