Cherry Headed Red Foot Tortoises. They are very good pets. They will follow you around the house like a dog when adults. Check out http://www.tortoiseforum.org/ You'll find more out about them. I hope to own one this next spring. :3

I like my sulcatas too. They need a lot of room and poop a lot for someone's living room though. But if that isn't a problem- they are awesome. Mine will come to me when they are on the far side of their 40' outdoor pen to see if I've got handouts when I call to them.

Unfortunately I don't live where a tort could be out year round so I need to go with something smaller and can be housed inside. Gotta say though, the sulcutas are pretty sweet looking.

My brother and his wife found a young sulcata walking along the highway in central Utah one November a couple of years ago. Unbelievable because it had already been cold at night. Eventually they found the foolish owner and gave it back.
Depending on where you are in Utah- how about russian torts? They might be able to overwinter in some parts of the state... If not outdoors, then maybe in a garage or cellar...
I think leopards get too big too. I've seen quite large one's before.
Redfoots even get kind of large for indoors unless you've got something like 4'x8' of floorspace somewhere for an indoor pen and then something larger for outdoors when it is warmer. I kind of think the dry utah air might be kind of hard on redfoots though. Maybe not on an irrigated lawn though...

I have a 3” CH-RF that will be housed indoors for the next couple years with supervised outdoor excursions -- I think they max out at about 12”. I have a spot next to the house on the west side, under a shade tree that is irrigated and will serve as summer housing when it gets older – it runs the length of the house and is 3’ wide. Indoor housing, it will probably get one of the bathrooms or the basement. No outdoor over-wintering here. I’m in the northern part of the state in a bowl valley with a ski area up the canyon.
That is one lucky tort your bro and wife found. Even central Ut can get bitter cold. I do field studies in Manti La Sal and we couldn’t even get in to all our study sites till well into July – roads were blocked with glaciers.
