Tums

Is it ok for chams to have Tums Antacid/Calcium supplement? The
reason I ask is because it is a calcium supplement and contains
natural fruits in the supplement and I would like to know what the
Antacid would do for a cham as far as good or bad. The way I would
administer it would be by crushing the tablets up into a fine powder
and then dusting feeders with it. Thoughts?

I've used Tums in a pinch for geckos, turtles/tortoises, etc. but not for chameleons. Its never been a problem. I crush them to powder with a mortar and pestle. You can also use eggshells from boiled eggs that have been dried out and crushed to a powder. The shells need to be cooked to make sure there is no bacteria on them.

Ok thank you for letting me know that the Tums are ok.

Now about the boiled eggs shells...

My dad keeps chickens and we regularly get eggs. Most are the brown eggs, or the green ones from Araucana chickens, and maybe a few white ones, but most of those are the eggs that he wants the chickens to set to hatch out. Would the brown eggs or green eggs be just as fine as the white ones fine if still crushed into a fine powder?

I have no idea but, I gotta ask... What made you think of this? Supplements aren't that expensive.
I know supplements aren't too expensive... but I live 45 minutes away from the nearest place that would sell supplements, and I hardly ever go to that area, and I don't really need anything other than supplements right now so I wouldn't want to just order them and then pay just as much, if not more money, for shipping. I seen the Tums and seen the calcium part and thought that this may temporarily work until I can get some Repashy Calcium Plus. I've been relying on mustard greens, lots of UVB, sunlight, and silkworms for a while and was hoping that I could find something that would help out for a little longer. And I did, in the Tums, and also the crushed egg shells.

Thanks kinyonga!

I keep chickens too.. I don't think it matters what color the shells are they are made up of the same stuff. (I have blue eggs and brown eggs)

Haha, them Araucana eggs are crazy aren't they!?

And thanks, if I can't get white egg shells then I'll just go with one of the other two. That is if the Tums aren't working out for my Veiled. I hope it does though, as it may keep his tummy settled :p

i want chickens!

whats in tums? lets see..... sucrose, calcium carbonate, corn starch, talc, mineral oil, adipic acid, artifical flavors, sodium polyphosphate, red 40 lake, blue 1 lake.

the sodium polyphosphate would have me concerned. as would the adipic acid (<i have no idea what that is) and the artificial coloring. but mostly the polyphosphate, i dont know how they would process that compound but your really dont want to be adding phosphorus to their diet.

make sure thats not in the ingredients list of whatevr kind of tums you have.

Will do, and if so then I'll stick to the crushed egg shells. Really what caught my eye was seeing "Calcium Supplement" and "natural fruit flavors", but I'll check all the ingredients. Keep in mind this is just temporary until I get Repashy.

I wouldn't use the tums regularly....just in a pinch.
Yeah I seen where you mentioned pinch in one of your previous posts and figured I would do the same. I need hurry up and get some Repashy so I will no longer have to worry about this

Well, natural fruit flavors doesnt necessarily mean it's natural. It might be a chemical compound, like an artificial flavor
natural flavor is chemical equivalent of the real flavor in nature, so you gotta be careful with that.
I guess once or twice wouldn't hurt, maybe if something goes on in your house and you couldnt get the supplement

I recently read in a really old post that a vet told a member to use crushed Tums. Apparently a lot of people do it. I'd say it would be okay to use it, but next time you're in town, get some reptile calcium. Plus you will need Cal w/D3 and Multivitamin. So either way you will have to get those somehow. Oh and from what I've been told about chicken eggs.. they are all the same. In fact, the white egg shells we are used too, are poop compared to the brown ones. I had no idea green egg shells existed so I can't give advice on those. Lol. I would honestly use the brown egg shells over the white any day. :)

Well it says natural and artificial flavors, but like I said the main thing was the calcium, and the addition of natural fruit made it more attractive.

I'm sorry but could you explain that again as it just blew my mind. Not exactly sure what you are saying but sure would like to know :)

Girl I ain't no city slicker, I know about eggs now :D. I was born and raised country so I'm good on that subject lol. When I say I live in the woods I mean I literally live in the woods(few houses to the right with wooded area in between us, back of property is 2 acres of wooded area and behind that is hundreds of acres of woods, up front is the road leading into the neighborhood, and to the left is a lone house sitting on 130+acres.) Oh and when you say when I go into town to get the stuff, the town I go to only has a small local petstore that does not carry calcium, but the other city I go to, Jacksonville, is where I would try to go to a PetSmart to get Repashy Calcium Plus(I know my supplements too lol and I am not going with 3 when I can do it with 1), but I hardly ever go to jville anymore because my school is in the town with the small local petstore, as well as where I play baseball.

She means...Artificial is artificial basically and be careful with wording on products. :)

i have no experience with tums. So i cant even give you any reall good advice on that. If you interested i can give you my opinion though. I would only do this short term. meaning less than 2 weeks. ;)

If you are saying that she is saying be careful of artificial, then oh, ok, I knew that lol.

"Keep in mind this is just temporary until I get Repashy." Posted that a little earlier in the thread, but yeah, only short term for sure ;). Although, if you haven't read all the posts on this thread, you should...some are quite intriguing :)

And what do you mean by, "and be careful with wording on products"?

Lol! You kill me! Don't you tell me about the country boy. I live in Kentucky. And we got some back hill mo-fo's in this area. Luckily, I live in a small town. I still have to order most of my stuff online though. That is exactly what you should do. That is.. if the trucks will come to your house. Haha. Calcium Plus is awesome sauce. I've been using it for months now. It makes things easy for me, and balanced for my Cham.

Oh I believe it about them Kentuckiyans. Yeyeyeyeye Live action!!! Turtle man lmao :D

I do order most of my stuff, but I don't need anything that I can order with the Repashy at the moment so that's why I'm looking to find it at PetSmart.

Oh and I know that the FedEx and UPS people must absolutely despise me. They have to go down at least 200' of the bumpiest dirt road I have ever been on in my life just to get to my house lol. I see them coming down there and leaving at like 30 or 40 mph so's not to get stuck :p

On a label, if you see natural flavor, there is no natural flavor. It's an artificial flavor made to taste like a natural flavor. If there were real fruits in the tums, they would put *insert fruit here* extract or fruit juice
Hope you got it :p
