Turtles used as keychains... this is very wrong

Who ever came up with this idea or whoever even buys these should be punched in the face and spit on.

Ugh... so sad. That second video where the turtle is trying to swim out the bag... painful to watch. Thanks for ruining my night! But seriously, as much as it hurts to watch, people need to be exposed to this and become aware so we can put an end to it.

I mean really! What kind of sick twisted mother -------- would ever think that such a thing even approaches a good idea! Can these people not see that this is very cruel? Stupid stupid stupid mo fos!

China is China. There is a lot of history behind the attitude towards this type of thing and hopefully this helps you understand why it's a practice there.

Unfortunately there is no regard or value for life because of the way China is run by the government. Not even human life:

If you help a dying child in the street, you are responsible for their healthcare costs for LIFE. It is the law not to care. Caring means you are punished financially for life.

It is not the Chinese race that is the problem...many people who watch that kind of video have racist opinions about it...it is the government that's the problem. I think the youth of China is really on the right track with things and I truly hope the culture changes back to the glory and magnificence that it was before the Cultural Revolution.

The people who would buy these turtles and newts as keychains are no different than the Paris Hilton-types that bought chihuahuas to put in their purses, and then 2 years later all the dog rescues are overrun with chihuahuas.

Also their traditional medicine has only the regard for human health, not the health of the ecosystem the materials are harvested from. Examples are sharks with their fins cut off, and the rest of the animal is left to suffer and die because only the fin is useful in medicine. Also, progress is paramount. An example is the pink river dolphins that have gone extinct because they were in the way of cargo ships.

A lot of things have to change in the world.

omg that is sick. I would never get one of those poor lil things to put on my key ring?
That guy was funny though on the video...Lets go back to america in the 1800's and the holocaust

All true. I was an adoption coordinator for years, and I coordinated many chinese adoptions. All the babies were girls simply because they were only allowed one child, and girls were of no use to the family. These beautiful baby girls are often stuffed into rolled up pieces of carpet and set in a park....if they were lucky. We can't judge because we have no idea what it's like to walk in their shoes.

my grandmother (god rest her soul) would tell me about how they used to pin "chameleons" (anoles) to their dresses back in the day any time it was made mention of the fact i bred or kept chameleons. in fact i asked her were they pined them.....and the impression i got was anywhere they saw fit.....

as though i would find that cool or interesting or some dumb BS. every time she mentioned it i just wanted to slap her. but in her mind she was doing nothing wrong and i never called her out on it (she was old and cute) it was just society back then, totally different state of mind. and in fact we havent come very far in regards to our respect or even acknowledgement of other organisms. at least as far as most people are concerned.

there arent very many of us that really have a strong concept of how integral every organism is to this world. most are closed minded or just sick if they can see this happening and accept it.

i really dont get this state of mind, or lack there of that would promote this novelty. the fact that someone even conceptualized this and is making profit deeply disturbs me.

like today at work im working for this elderly woman cynthia, who claims to be an animal lover . and right before im leaving im like " OH MY GOD LOOK THAT HAWK HAS A BUNNY!!!!" it was the only time ive ever seen this and thought it was AWeSOME!

this woman is lucky enough to have at least 2 redtails and a coopers hawk constantly patrolling above.

and she says "aww poor bunny i HATE those things theyre like vultures."

and i pause and say, "theyre nothing like vultures....and whats wrong with vultures? they eat all the dead things. if anything vultures are nicer than hawks..."

and she inturrupts me and says "i love bunnies..." (even though shes complained to me about them time and time again about them eating all her flowers) and she continues by beginning a story she has said time and time again "...remember i told you i saved that bunny from that pytho..."

and i cut her off and say "hawks are beautiful, if they didnt eat bunnies they wouldnt exist, the bunnies will be fine they reproduce so...."

and she cuts me off again and says "well i hate them" i just wanted to curb stomp her at this point but im sure the old hag dosnt have the teeth to knock out. well thats how i felt, i was infuriated. i woundt actually do that i really like her otherwise but this is a perfect example of the ignorance that lets stuff like this occur. either that or the greed, if those involved in this trade are aware of what theyre doing (and im sure they are, one dies they buy another)

anyways as soon as she said "well i hate them" i said "i thought you said you were an animal lover", and she let out this weird awkward cackle like she had begun to realize what she was saying wasnt really right...it was so awkward.

and mind you ive never spoken out of turn with this woman before that point. i tend to be very conservative in voicing my opinion(especially to an employer) unless its around people i know, family friends or over the internet. because people often dont like how forward i am when im being straight with them. i perfer establishing a strong relationship with people before i start acting like, as ive been told i am on here, an 'ass" which i am XD

love me know know you cant help it.

ALSO! does anyone remember bonsai kittens?

they would shove these kittens in jars when they were very tiny. sick a feeder hose down their throat and insert hoses on the ummmm waste outlets. and as these cats would grow they would become horribly deformed as they aged in these glass vessels...... im glad to say a year or so after signing a petition to have this stopped i found out this was only a social experiment a few college kids started and was completely untrue.....though they had some very convincing photos.

Cruelty and disregard for life.

I saw a video of a Chinese woman jump off an overpass in China and the cars just drove around her... Putting on blinkers and just going around while she was twitching. One of the sickest things I have ever seen.

But I have nothing against anyone of Chinese decent. I have plenty of international friends at my college from china but they say the government practically will excommunicate gays. The teachers are even allowed to make school announcements if someone admits to being gay. They can tell the parents and practically be murdered or beaten without consequence to the abuser. I can't understand humans sometimes... But there is also a lot of love in the world so I guess if we can't stop the abusers of life we can just live it to the fullest?

Well, now that I have read through this whole thread I am going to go swallow a bottle of prozac! Anyone wanna join?

Seriously, it really drives me crazy. I remember years ago I was with my Dad looking at some SUV's (this was around the time when they became popular). We all get in the car- he was driving and the salesman and I were in the back seat. I forget what it was but a small bug (I remember noting it was non-poisonous) started walking up the seat. The salesman immediate smashed it with his hand and then turned to me and said "That bug was not even worth killing" (Based on its size). I just remember thinking, "Why? What did you just gain?". Then again I was the weird kid growing up that did not kill bugs and yelled at the babysitters for flushing spiders down the toilet.

I just think life is very special. To take a life (no matter what the nature of that life may be) is a pretty powerful thing to do. I am not going to wave the Janist flag here, but I think people should be more aware. Kill a black widow in your house if that is what you have to do- but recognize what you are doing and try to minimize it.

Back to the turtles,
I am still mad about that video! Disgusting!

Ok, I can see where you guys are coming from with the cultural perspective (that is very very unfortunate), and it may add some perspective but really, does this not sound pathological to you:
"Hmmmm... I wonder if I took a baby turtle, stuck it in a little baggie full of liquid and sealed it shut, then attached a keychain to it, if people would pay money for it. Hot damn, that sounds like a really good idea!!!"

Corrupt government or not, there is seriously something wrong with that way of thinking.... IMHO.
