Possums are so wonderful. I run into them and raccoons sometimes in the TNR work I do with feral and homeless cats. I've never seen them open their mouths like that, though! They are pretty chill and usually just lumber out of the cage and into bushes or trees when I open it.

Anything that kills ticks is a good thing in my book. I love raccoons too, idk how people kill them... theres a family that comes up to our porch at night, the baby will even come up and sniff me lol. It's probably not recommended to be that close to them, but whatever.
A lot of cool things are "not recommended" hahaha

Racoons get a bad reputation because they can carry rabies. If there are no rabies outbreaks near you and you're able to observe their behavior and it's not erratic, then they're just like any other wild creature. I try not to encourage raccoons by not feeding them anything because they can piss people off and therefore jeopardize safety of feral cat colonies.

All that said, I love them, too! Some are very friendly and they're a blast to watch, especially while they're eating. However Raccoons do not take kindly to being trapped, lol. So I'll take a possum over a raccoon any day.

Lol my neighbors probably hate me, we have woods so anything that is food related gets thrown outside. The deer here will even walk up to you with their babies. Never seen anything like it

Raccoons are just, smart cats with thumbs.

Yes! Like monkey cat lemurs. They have torn into my trash so many times I can't even count, yet I still think they're awesome.

I have 2 skunks that scratch on my sliding glass door every night asking for food. There are times when I've thought I should discourage it in case it gets them in trouble at other houses...but I think/hope they are smart enough that it doesn't happen.
I have opossums and raccoons too that frequent my back yard.

Opossums have so many teeth!

They're ruthless killers, and do it for fun sometimes. I've had to walk the creek counting legs & heads to find out how many young chickens were still loose after a break-in ?
They're responsible for several missing barn kittens, too.

Opossums are chill though, usually just gotta push 'em along with a shovel, or wait until the play dead to carry them away haha
