I would not be too strict about it with a male.
It certainly won't hurt to skip a day ... pretty soon he will decide for you and go on a big 'ol hunger strike.
Don't worry when that happens, they can go quite a few days without food and he will eat when he's hungry.

Oh sorry to bother you last question is the reptisun 5.0 18" to small for his 24x24x48 cage

It's not too small for what it needs to do, as long as your chameleon can perch within a few inches of it ... does the enclosure seem dark inside though?
You may want to add another fixture with either another 5.0 or a fluorescent plant light just to brighten things up.

Mine never went through much of an ugly phase. He did become very hostile after his veil really started developing and still is to this day! lol
