Unhappy Veiled Cham

Hi all,

I need to ask for advice from all members regarding my Veiled chameleon. I have completed the "How to ask for help" sticky below:

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Veiled, male, approx 1yr 8 mths old. He has been in my care since May 18, 2011 (almost one year).
Handling - Rarely, as he is quite cantankerous.
Feeding - I feed him crickets, superworms, silkworms, roaches & mealies. He usually eats around 3 superwoms or 5 crickets per day. I give him food in the morning and will add extra in afternoon if necessary. Worms are fed bran and pumpkin, crickets get slices of pumpkin and carrot and dried gut-loader protein granules.
Supplements - I use Exo Terra pure calcium powder to dust feeders every day, Exo Terra multi vitamin every second week and Repti-rite calcium with D3every other second week.
Watering - I spray him with a misting bottle twice a day for approximately 5mins. He usually drinks a few drops each time.
Fecal Description - Have not seen a fecal for two weeks but previous ones were dark brown and urate was white with slight orange bit on the end. He has not been tested for parasites but I took him to pet shop where I bought him from and they gave him dewormer (intra boost).
History - No info available except that he was bought by someone then taken back to pet shop where he was kept in a small glass enclosure. The second time I saw him in there, I decided to buy him and take him home.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Plastic mesh 2m (h) x 1.4m (w) x 0.8m (d)
Lighting - 150W Basking day lamp (outside) & Reptisun 5.0 UVB tube (inside). Lights go on at 6am and get switched off at 6:30pm. I also cover the side of his enclosure where he sleeps with a towel so its nice and dark.
Temperature - Floor is between 65-68F, middle is between 68-72F and basking spot is 85-87F. Lowest overnight temp over last month was 60.8F. Temps measured with probe and digital thermometer.
Humidity - Not sure of humidity as I don't have a hygrometer.
Plants - There are live and fake plants in his enclosure. The live ones are a ficus and a schefflera.
Placement - Enclosure is situated in a small room adjacent to lounge. There are no fans or vents and there is no traffic except when feeding, misting and cleaning. The floor is carpeted which helps with warmth and the top of the enclosure reaches just over 2m from the floor.
Location - I live in Crestholme, KZN, South Africa (not far from Durban).

Current Problem - He is not eating and I have noticed that he closes his eyes for a few seconds every now and then. After trying repeatedly to get him to eat, he ate a superworm and some mealworms and I was so happy until I found them regurgitated on a leaf the next morning. They were still whole and looked normal except for some milky slime coating. I took him to be dewormed the same day (Friday midday) but have not seen any improvement. The pet shop owner told me that he may be lacking vit A so I have been dissolving a tiny amount of multi vitamin in water and misting him with that which he also drinks so at least he is getting vitamins. I cant understand whats happening and nothing has changed with his setup. What could cause him to regurgitate and why does he close his eyes? Please can members give suggestions as to what the problem may be - I am worried sick and want to help him but don't know what else to do.

Do you mean Repti-vite? Doesn't it contain vitamin A already??
What source of vitamin A is in the vitamin you are dissolving and giving to him?

A pet shop owner is probably the worst place to go to ask for help with a sick cham. Go to a vet. If your washing machine isn't working you don't go to an appliance store, you call a repairman.

Vitamin A is something that you have to be careful when you give it and dissolving a multivitamin in water and spraying the leaves is NOT a good way to give anything. You have absolutely no idea how much you are giving your cham of anything.

No, the multi vitamin is an Exo Terra product.

Here is the webpage for this item -

And here is the description of this item taken from the webpage -
"Most reptiles and amphibians are unable to obtain the essential vitamins and trace minerals that they require from a captive diet. Exo Terra Multi Vitamin Powder Supplement is formulated to meet the nutritional needs of reptiles and amphibians in conjunction with their daily diet. It contains precise levels of vitamins, amino acids and trace elements that are essential for energy production, growth, maintenance, reproduction and many other bodily functions.

Exo Terra Multi Vitamin Powder Supplement is a complementary pet food for reptiles and amphibians.

>Vitamin A from beta carotene
>Contains all the essential amino acids
>Perfectly balanced trace elements, minerals, amino acids and vitamins
>Stimulates growth, reproduction and other vital bodily functions
>For reptiles and amphibians"

You must understand that I live in South Africa and our pet shops do not have the same brands and products as the US. This multi vitamin comes highly recommended and I use it for all my reptiles.

So there is an update to this story.

My veiled has been given intra boost which is basically the same as Reptaid. It restores their internal balance and helps to increase appetite. Let's hope this makes a difference.

I have also found a local exotic vet and am waiting to hear back from her as to whether I need to bring him in or not.

Can anyone tell me if there is something wrong with my setup as described above? I know that I need to measure the humidity but is there anything else wrong?

Yes, the UVB light is inside & attached to the mesh that covers the top of the enclosure. I put it inside as I read that most of the UVB light would be filtered out by the plastic mesh. I have felt the tube on many different occasions and it is only warm to the touch, never hot. He cant reach the light as it is too high and besides that, he does not climb onto the ceiling. This is a really big enclosure that I built myself from scratch. I adore my chameleons and want them to have a spacious home and feel comfortable.

while yes the mesh will filter some of the uvb, it doesnt filter all of it.

I would remove the bulb from inside the enclosure.

and since you say he closes his eyes sometimes, this could be wy.

can you post photos of him and his cage please?

are you sure he threw up the food, as it is possible for them to poop out a whole type bug.

NTM, how positive are you on his basking temp?

they need heat to digest, so if hes too cold, he wont eat, and wont digest properly.

Another update...

From chatting with the vet and other herpers, it seems more than likely that Helmut is impacted from eating super worms. They were his favourite and I gave in to him as he never seemed too interested in crickets or roaches. I now know that chameleons should eat mainly flying insects and worms/grubs should only be given as a treat. Lesson learnt. I will be posting elsewhere about this so other people can avoid making the same mistake. Wish that someone had told me before I found myself in this horrible situation.

I have made an appointment with the vet and will be taking my big boy tomorrow morning to be examined. I am terrified to say the least and feel sick to the bottom of my stomach. Hope that I am doing the right thing.

Chams should not survive on flying insects alone, besides youl never fidn enough to feed him.

Crickets, roaches, and silkworms are staple feeders.

Camimom, I measured his temps with a digital thermometer but they do fluctuate slightly depending on the air temperature of the house. I live in sunny South Africa and our weather is very warm, sometimes unbearable. I have also had Helmut for almost a year now in the same conditions and he has been flourishing. When I took him to get intra boost, the pet shop owner even said that he was beautiful and big and strong. This is what I don't understand, is that he looks awesome and his colours are bright green, yet he is not eating and clearly not well.

I could not be sure that he regurgitated the worm as I didn't see him do it. I only noticed it in the morning when I was misting his enclosure. Either way, it is not good and I am going to take him to the vet. She said she would palpitate his abdomen and possibly give him an enema. I would like to know if anyone has had this procedure done on their chameleon and how it turned out? She also mentioned an x-ray but I would rather he didn't have to endure that!

you may want to try to up his basking temps a bit, see how he does. and i wuld mist him alot more, at least 5 times aday.

and natural sunlight is good fo rhim.
he may have closed his eye becase he was cleaning it out, they do that sometimes.

and an enema is worse than an xray, but if he has a blockage, it can show it.

I am at work at the moment, but will take some pics when I get home to post for everyone to see.

I find it so frustrating that we can't get a wide range of feeders here. I did manage to get silkworms last year and he loved them but the guy does not do silkworms anymore. I even tried to get my own silkworm colony going and they spun coccoons and the moths hatched and laid little eggs everywhere but none of them hatched. I don't know what went wrong and was bummed as these are the best feeder IMO because they are soft-bodied which makes them easy to digest and they are full of protein and water.

I know about the eye cleaning and have watched both of my chameleons roll their eyes around while I am spraying them. This is different. And since watching him closely, I noticed that it is only one eye that he closes at a time and it is only for a few seconds then he opens it up again and looks around. He does not do it all the time, just every now and then but I know that this is not normal. He has never done this before, it started a few days ago and it is most likely linked to whatever is wrong with him. He probably feels uncomfortable and must be hungry from not eating.

he could have an eye infeciton.

I have changed his basking bulb from a 100W to a 150W and he used to sit higher up but now he sits a little lower so he must be warm enough otherwise he would be as close to the light as possible. And I have been leaving a heater on next to his enclosure to increase the ambient temperature. Our daily temperatures outside have been hitting in the upper twenties lately, so he really should not be cold. Plus, he has been fine with the 100W for the last 6 months so surely a 150W would make a big difference to him now?

Yeah, high twenties in celsius. I misted him when I got home and he drank quite a lot. Then I started to go downhill. Sorted out all my other pets and put him to bed and then I became violently ill. Think its from all the worry. Just woke up now at 5am local time as I was tossing and turning. Today is D-day and I am beside myself with worry. I am praying with every bit of hope I have that the vet will be able to sort him out.
