update on Gail - I was shocked !!!!

I was finally able to get Gail into a vet who treats chams - my vet is great, love her, but not a cham vet - we have been fighting a uri and eye infection - on baytril, but she just was not getting better ~ I knew something was not right from the get go- as all my threads have said- lol but what we found at the vet was shocking - not only did she still have her uri- (that I knew, but her eye is good now) but also a broken jaw :( that was also infected, and just started w/ mouth rot - but no mbd, the vet checked everything - even hooked her up to a little heart monitor. She is still very sick - I asked the vet if putting her down was better than treating her- she has been thew so much- only feeding w/ a syringe - bug juice and water every 3 hrs for almost 2 weeks- we are both tired - but she said her heart was still strong, and she should have died by now, so she has the will to fight - and she told me the jaw was painful,, but not so much so that she needs put down for that - Gail came to me as a rescue, she was found by my friend who went to a show to pick up crickets, and noticed her on a table, anyone was able to just walk up and pick her up- we THINK ( but will never know for sure) that someone dropped her, causing the broken jaw, but she had already lost her left eye , so her face was kinda odd shaped, but as she tried to eat crickets, her jaw began to move , and at some point the bone pierced the skin, and that is how the infection got in the bone - and the baytirl kept it from killing her, but was not enough to get rid of it - so now she is on fortaz - 1 shot every 3 days, she has 10 shots she needs to get - this is not going to be easy for either one of us- and let me tell you- that is one skinny little leg to get a shot into - I am scared to do it, but I know I must - she is also on critical care diet, and was given hydration under the skin, and I will be taking her back every 3 days for the next week for more hydration, and also to have check ups to be sure she is improving, and the infection is not getting worse - if at any time the vet feels she is only getting worse, and putting her down is best, then I will do that- it will break my heart, but I do not want to cause her any harm or pain if she is not getting better, and the vet is almost in another state - it is very far- I left my house at 12:30, and did not get home until after 5 - but she is worth it :D I am amazed at her will to survive - she is so special to me, and I thank everyone who has helped me with her- you all have been so great - we still have quite the battle to fight, and I know at any time things can go bad , but we are going to hang in there.

Cheryl we are all here with you. I am thrilled you finally know what it wrong and how to address the problem. Gail is a lucky Cham to have ended up with a person who shows the dedication you have shown to Gail. Wonderful job.

Thank you Lauri, I could not have done this without the help I have received here, from you, and John,, and everyone - but I give most of the credit to little Gail , she IS the real one who has fought so hard , I will not give up on her:)

oh my goodness

What a good momma your are to Gail. She is lucky to have you. With all your doing and her fighting I feel hopeful.

Best wishes
Amy

O'my that little girl is a fighter. Im glad she is on the road for recovery. Keep doing what your doing cheryl! We are here for you if you need anything.

Please update us.

thanks guys- I was in tears today when the told me how many shots I have to give her- but its so nice to have ppl who are so supportive:D I am still very worried for her, and the shots scare me , I have a farm, and am used to doing horse, kittens, dogs, anything with hair, heck, I even once had to give my sister a shot- lol but her leg is SO SO tiny - but I CAN do this !! ( right? lol )
I will keep you all posted :)

Wow. Cheryl, it seems to me that both you AND Little Gail are fighters! Hang in there. You are certainly strong and can do the things you set your mind too. I'll be sending positive thoughts. I also gave my diabetic cat shots twice a day for years. It is hard to imagine putting a needle into a little chameleon leg, but then again, I thought the same thing about my cat before I did it. Once you do it a couple times, I'm sure you'll be an old pro!

Wow! Gail sure is a lucky girl to have you as her caregiver! Without you in her corner, noone might have ever found out what was bothering her. I'm so glad that now you know and are on the right path to getting her better! Good luck to you both! I will be watching for updates!

I have to add my name to the list of those who applaud you for your persistence in helping Gail.
She is truly lucky to have you taking care of her and I wish you both the best.
One of my chams had a bad infection last year that wasn't cured by several meds but eventually, an injectable medicine helped him to overcome the infection.
A good vet is definitely a valuable asset, especially when it comes to chams.

Thanks :) I am trying my best. NOWWWWWWWW that I am a client at this vet it wont be so hard to get in next time if needed, but this will ALWAYS be my cham vet from now on- and you all are correct in the fact that a good cham is worth their weight in gold !!
she must be feeling better , she is SUPPOSE to be resting, but yesterday I had to put her in "Gail Jail " - lol it was like she wanted to go jogging or something - lol - she was in a "intensive care" care cage to keep her quiet, but she got out 5 X's in like 15 min- so they said to return her to her reg/ cage- and she loves the C. Care food- so they went ahead and approved an extra feeding (so now 4X a day :D) but I know we are still not out of the woods- my only worry is...they want her kept at 94 - but when she is at that temp- she goes all pail, stresses , and opens her mouth, and I can just tell that is to hot - she has the choice to move away from it - but wont leave her vine- so I moved the light, and put everything back so she is at 89 , and she just loves her little heating pad on the side of the cage- with that and her bask light, she is happy at 89/90 - is that warm enough ? if I push her any higher she acts like she is going to just drop dead - and I really don't want to 'force" her to that temp- would do you think I should do ? force her- or let her stay at 89/90? the vet wants her @ 94 - I dont want to not do what the vet said, but I really think that is just to hot for her- what do you think I should do?? I thought about trying to "sneak" the temps up on her by slowly moving the light over - idk- what has others done? please feel free to advise me on this
and thanks again for all the support - you guys are the BEST :D

I always try to follow good vet info after I get it. That said you are with her 24/7 if you feel she needs to be cooler by a small I would follow my best instincts. jmo

yes, thats kinda what I am doing - I have "snuck" the light to 91- I also changed the angle of the mist forger to blow under the hottest light( the one she hates-lol) so the mist kinda takes the heat to her- when I go back w/ her on Sat for her next round of check-ups, hydration, and shot, I am going to ask how I can get her that high w/ out stressing her- I do really want her at the temp they said -

Where are you? US? West Coast? Oregon?
I am pretty good caring for a sickly cham... I am offering help, but..

AFAIK, I think that one of the challenges of Gracefuls / Gracilis is that they come from a number of areas with different temperature ranges.
The result is that a perfect temperature for one is too cold or too warm for another.
Trust your observations and instincts.

THANK YOU for saying that lovereps - as much as I WANT to follow the vets instructions, I just can tell by watching her she is just to hot at that temp, and I can tell by her actions and color, she was very uncomfortable , and when I looked to see the area she came from- I also saw it was vast- and I thought to myself, maybe she is not from one of the hotter parts - and prefers the cooler temps - I just want to give her the best care I can, and at times I doubt myself so much - and I have never had a cham that was not sick to start with - so I dont know what "normal" is for her- her favorite spot is by her heating pad- if I move it, she will go to where ever I hang it on the cage, leaving the basking spot to stay by the pad- I find this odd- lol but it is what she likes - and its all about Gail right now- lol we go to the vet @ 11 on Sat, so I will feel much better if they say she is improving - I just can't seem to keep her hydrated enough- I think she must feel a little better, she is getting fussy when I take her out to do her meds/feeding, and wants to walk around, but I wont let her- and she is a SNEAK - I do all her feeding on the floor on a small heating pad wrapped in a towel - and if you take your eyes off her for 1 sec- she is off and running , before , she just sat there. I just hope she makes it, I will feel so much better when she is drinking on her own =)

Little leaf you are an amazing cham mommy! So dedicated! And I am so glad that you now have a diagnosis and course of action! Will be keeping you and Gail in my thoughts and prayers!!:D

back from the vets

well, little Gail contuses to deify the odds- GO GAIL GO!!! :D she has gained weight , got approved to up her feeding to .6 4X a day - still not allowed solid bugs- but I know she wants them - she attacked her feeding syringe this am - she is acting ravenous-:D little heart still strong :) as excited as I wanted to be, they still tell me stay guarded, as they dont want to be hopeful until she has made 2 weeks - ( but inside I was cheering !! just for a sec, I had to:eek: ) but I know there are still many shots to be had, and that is alot of stress for her to get poked ( I dont know who will have more stress - the poker or the poke-e:eek: )
she also has taken to "jogging" in the am now- she goes all over her cage- still mostly w/ eye closed- her eye is ok now- not sure why she wont use it - but it is clear, and looks ok the vet said- must be her way to make me even more nervous- lol she has taken to "death deifying " stretches and actions- I am sure this is normal, but a first for me- all she has done for me until a few days ago is sit in a little ball - now I feel the need to tape her to her vine to keep her quiet:rolleyes:

Wow...what an amazing success story! Little leaf you are amazing in your care and concern for Gail. She is lucky to have found you and to have someone give her the love and necessities she deserves in life! Its so heartwarming to read your story, on a forum that can (to me) become a bit discouraging at times when reading the Health Clinic posts of owners who know nothing about keeping a chameleon.

The level of care you are giving Gail, and your desire to improve her life is awesome. Keep up the good work, and remain quietly optimistic...you have done a really, really great job so far!
