Urgent advice required!! Ill carpet.

Hi all, I work away from home a lot and my wife looks after the herps for me. After being away for nearly 2 weeks I went in to clean and check everyone and found that my male carpet was a pale yellow colour and had sunken eyes.

Assuming he was dehydrated I immediately offered him a syringe of water which he took and sprayed thoroughly before wandering off to go off the handle at my wife for not spraying properly:eek:

Later, I took him out to try and syringe some more liquid into him with reptiboost in it to bring his electrolyte levels back up and he did a dropping on me which appeared to have 2 maggots in it!! Urate was white and dropping was brown but a bit wet.

These are not worms (at least, not like any I have seen before) and all my other animals are fine. I do not think this is anything he came with as I have had him for four months and would expect this to have shown up before if present so I am at a loss as to what it could be.

He is in a 45x45x60 Exo Terra, temps around 25-27C, humidity around 70-75%

He has been fine until now and the pictures in my thread here:https://www.chameleonforums.com/couple-pics-my-carpets-14025/ were taken the last time I was home around a week and a half ago.

Any advice gratefully received on possible cures/dosages as we do not have a vet near me that deals with this type of exotics.

I have had maggots get in the poo before, but not fresh poo, are you sure it's not some sort of nematode!
If you chameleon is wild caught and hasn't been treated for parasites, it is likely that he has been carrying some what of a parasite load. I would recommend getting him some food, hydrating him, and consider having a fecal done at the vet, for an appropriate diagnosis. Most internal worms are treated with Panacur, once and then again in 2-3 weeks to kill off any eggs that may have hatched since the first dose. Some reptile breeders/suppliers shotgun WC's with a round of Panacur before they are sold, but is often times not sufficient without a follow up.
If you don't have/know of a good vet in your area, I could sugest these sites to try to find one:

Good luck, he is an AMAZING looking guy. I really love all the red around the turrets!

ive seen a maggot in a dead cricket so if my cham ate another cricket w/ a maggot in it would there be anything wrong with my cham. this is hypothetical.

I was wondering a similar thing - my crickets died from collard greens and began to eat each other. There were only several alive and it had only been overnight this oocured so I fed them to my cham. She seems fine but I wondered as well if bacteria from crickets eating crickets could be passed to my cham.

He is a CB chameleon and is still active and keeping both eyes open. I have acquired some wormer and dosed him and got some more liquid with reptiboost into him so hopefully he will be OK.

I am hopeful given his activity level, but I am still baffled as to why they would be there. They are definately not nematodes.

By the way, thanks for the links Ibesok, but I am in the UK.

Doh...didn't see this post!

Good news that he's taking on water mate...very unusual to hear about cb carpets getting ill...but maybe a lot of people keep it quiet  Sounds like you have it under control, just be careful in this bloody heat...my chams are getting a LOT of water at the moment! If you have a pump sprayer just pump it up, leave it on top of the viv facing down and let it empty (good rain session!)...maybe even stick the cage outside for a bit in a few days (I hear the rains are a-coming) ;)...let us know mate

I am so sorry about the lost of your friend. I wish I could have responded to your cry for help but I have never heard of this maggot thing. I had a dog once that got that very same thing and had to take him to the vet. It was vile --- drug his butt all over the house.

Sympathy for your loss.

Hi,i dont think there FF there different there parasites i had these a while ago, thankfully the did not hurt my chameleons, they come with the crickets and feed on dead cricket bodies and anything that dies.
Hope this never happens to you again and sorry for your loss

Hi Treelions, you aren't thinking about the wooly worm type things are you (look a bit like ladybird larvae)? If so, these are not the same thing as they are beetle larvae but I can't remember the species. They were definately a species of fly and were in a D. hydeii culture.

Yeah i get you fella deffo flies tiny twichy scatty things about 1/4 of the size of giant D.hydeii
the other things are ok they clean up dead bodys and keep things clean(they used to use them to clean bones of remaining flesh at the nat history mus

Thanks for all the no help guys (and a genuine thanks to the people that replied)

I understand your frustration but it's not this forums fault that you lost your chameleon. Most people here can give great advise, but we are not vets. When you have a problem like this, you should immediately take your chameleon to a vet.

Once again, sorry for your loss. :(
