My baby veiled chameleon, Axel, just came in today. He was super cold by the time he got here (avi pic is of him as soon as he came in) and I think thats why hes hanging just below his UVA/UVB bulb. Ive seen some pix of chams with UV burns and it can be bad, so I was wondering can it hurt him hanging under the light like this??

yes he could get burned. I would clamp the light up if it is sitting on top of the screen so the screen does not get as hot if you have it laying on there.

Deffo clamp light up off the cage!!! I learned the hard way. The lamp was originally touching the mesh, then when my Simba went up there to get nearer the lamp, he burned his belly bless him.

I've now clamped the lamp to a shelf right next to his cage and that stops the cage itself getting too hot.

Funny how they like to hang upside down under the lamps. The locusts seem to love chillin up there too :D

I know, it seems like a cham's whole life is dedicated to burning themselves :(

It must be the brand of bulb I have, but its really not putting off any heat at all. I could almost grab the bulb. (Repta glow? I think?) I was more concerned with UV burns. I think its a lot like sun poisoning for reptiles?

This link shows a diagnosis from a cham with UVB burns about half way down the page. WARNING though, it has some pictures of sick chams that are a bit disturbing!
