UVA for suckers?

My chams zoo med basking spot lamp went out for the 3rd time in two months. I am getting tired of paying $8 a bulb. Can I provide UVA to my chameleon a cheaper way?

wish you had asked sooner, just use a regular 75watt frosted house bulb, 4 for $1 :D or a higher or lower wattage depending on the temps you need.

This is probably the biggest way pet stores sucker people, buying the $10 "basking bulbs" haha!

You can use an incandescent or halogen bulb for basking, but neither give off UV. You need a fluorescent or specialty mercury vapor bulb to provide the needed UVB, either of which will also provide UVA. UVA has important effects on behavior and seems important to the, for lack of a better term, mental health of diurnal reptiles and some other species.
