Hi there,
I am so confused about the % of uvb I'm supposed to be using. Seriously, half of my sources say 10.0 while the other half say 5.0. I don't know what to use! I've heard that the mesh helps filter out the UVB and so if you use a 10.0 you end up getting about 5% of what would be coming through, which is almost the same as just using a 5.0.
When I bought my jackson chameleon about a year ago, he came with a full set up. Everything is fine, except now I am starting to wonder if the hood is okay. It's one of those Zoo Med dual hoods that holds a heat bulb and a UVB bulb.
As a side note, my jackson died because the store that sold me the whole set up didn't tell me how old the lightbulb was. So, I thought it was good for a while and didn't worry about it. My jackson died within a few months and I was devastated because I had no idea what I did wrong. I went and got the bulb checked and it had basically no output and I realized that that's why the jackson died.
(I know this post is really long, I'm sorry, I just want to get details in)
Any ways, later on I purchased my first panther and had her (before I realized it was a she) for 5 months. The guy who sold her to me told me that they need a 10.0 bulb. I cross checked at another reptile store that I frequent and they said they use 10.0s as well because the mesh filters out some of the UVB. So I got a 10.0 and the panther did perfectly fine with it. She even tripled in size within the few months that I had her.
I sold her however, and used the money to buy a sambava this weekend at the reptile expo. As you know, there was nothing inexpensive about him, but that's alright because I expected to spend that amount of money. So because I invested a lot into him I am just worried I'm doing something wrong and I want to make sure NOTHING BAD HAPPENS!
The people who sold me the sambava gave me a care sheet that said to never use a 10.0 because its too strong. And looking at the package, the 10.0 does say it is for desert reptiles. Also their set ups, and all the other set ups I've ever seen, have a tube uvb in a hood and a clamp lamp heat bulb.
Please, tell me your set ups, and tell me what you think is best. I haven't had any problems so far, but I just want to make sure if he'll be fine with my current set up.
