Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Veiled, unknown sex, vet said maybe less then a month old. Purchased Feb 23
Handling - Handling around 4 or 5 times a day, seems to like to be in my hand, will only drink when i'm holding him.
Feeding - He is currently eating small crickets, that are being fed Fluker's high calcium cricket diet, I put Vaux in a small container with nothing but a few crickets in it, he'll only eat 1-3 a day. I am also dusting the crickets with calcium plus before presenting them. I try and feed him in the morning, in the afternoon, and at night, he usually only eats in the afternoon though.
Supplements - Fluker's high calcium cricket diet, though I never really see the crickets eating it, and dusting with Repashy Superfoods chameleon calcium plus. I usually just let the crickets live with the food in their cage so they can eat whenever, then I pick a few right before feeding, dust them, and present them to my baby veiled.
Watering - He never drinks on his own, that i've seen, but I have a water dripper with a hose that I put through the side of the cage, average of 2 drops per second, and the drops of water hit the fake vine and leaves. I have to put warm water in a shot glass, microwave for 8 seconds, and use a small baster to pour water on him and on his lips, he'll open his mouth sometimes to get water, but he won't drink in his cage, only from my hand. The water I am using is bottled. I spray him and his cage with both Zilla tropical mist and tap water in a squirt bottle on the mist setting at least 4 times a day.
Fecal Description - Once a day, if that. Blackish brown, with white and or yellow, goopy looking. Never been tested for parasites.
History - He was in a somewhat small cage with 20 or so other baby veileds, pretty active when first purchased, then started to slow down as the days went by.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - 16x16x30, it's a ZooMed reptibreeze open air aluminum cage.
Lighting - During the day, I have a 75w ZooMed repti basking spot lamp, which sits in a dome lamp fixture right on top of the cage, also during the day I have a Exo Terra 13w 5.0 UVB which pretty much sits right on top of the cage next to the heat lamp. At night, I turn both lights off, and turn a ZooMed 60w nightlight red light on for him.
Temperature - The cage temperature is about 80 degrees, with the basking spot around 95 degrees during the day. At night it's about 80 degrees, lowest i've seen it was about 65 degrees maybe. I have a Zilla humidity/temperature gauge, but I don't trust it much as the readings are usually off.
Humidity - Humidity is about 80% during the day, with the humidifier right next to him, during the night it might fall to about 40%, but like I said, the readings are whack sometimes. The tarp keeps the humidity trapped, but there is some airflow so it's not stagnant. And since we have to bathe him and kind of hand feed him, the air is circulating well.
Plants - There is one plant in the center of his cage, in a pot, sitting on news paper. I forgot the name of it, but it's a common dark green leaved plant you get from wal-mart. There are also fake vines that I have wrapped around his cage, and a few sticks from outside.
Placement - The cage is on a plant rack in the guest bedroom. It's about a foot off the ground. There is a clear plastic tarp that goes over the rack, I unzip the front of it to let the humidity circulate. On the side of the rack, I have a humidifier under the clear tarp that is on the lowest setting. Tap water used in the humidifier, if thats of any importance. There are no fans, nor air vents near the cage, I do leave the window cracked slightly, even during the night for more circulation. The top of the cage sits around 4 1/2 feet off the ground. The room is usually humid feeling, never cold or without much humidity, the door to the room stays shut at all times.
Location - Southern California

Current Problem - Vaux's eyes were getting very swollen, he won't eat more then 3 crickets a day. He rarely opens his eyes, and wobbles back and forth when walking blindly. He'll fall over in my hand at times, but won't have the strength to pick himself back up. I can tell when he's having a decent day because he'll turn a beautiful dark and light green pattern. Usually he's very pale green though, sickly looking. He is also 2 grams in weight, and only about an inch in length minus his tail. The vet gave me Gentamicin Sulfate Ophthalmic Solution eye drops, which I have been giving Vaux twice a day as directed. The swelling went down for the most part, but he still won't open his eyes a lot. He sits on the highest branch in his cage for the most part, which is about 4-6 inches below the heat lamp, and sometimes I catch him with his mouth open, mostlikely he's too hot, from what i've read. He sits there with his eyes closed in the same spot for most of the day, he is only really awake when I take him out for his bathes and feeding. The vet said maybe I should get saline eye drops and carnivore to help. He also said anything less then drowning him will help. Some spots on him are missing scales, and their just black spots. And like I told the vet, I'll fight to the teeth to get him healthy again. If anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

The problem with chameleons is that at that age they are very fragile. He/she probably shouldn't even be seperated from the clutch mates yet! They can be very difficult for vets to treat due to their size. You can tell sex very easy with veileds, a male will have a spur (little extra toe) on the back of the hind feet, females do not have this. It's important to know becuse you will keep females in a slightly different way to males as the get older.

How big are the crickets that you are presenting? They should be very small, no bigger than the gap between his eyes. Also, he might not be a cricket lover so you may want to try something else like fruit flies? I think you could benefit from better gutloading too, that fluckers stuff isn't a patch on fresh fruit and veg. Here's a great link to sandrachameleons blog, you will find great info there! https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/

I think you may be misinterpreting his handling habbits. Quite often a chameleon will be wanting to get out because he is unhappy in his enclosure, in your case I would guess that he is too hot in there. Your basking temp is more suited to an adult male vieled and a good experienced keeper/breeder called jannb reccomends a lower temp than that. Here's a link to her care sheet for baby veiled and panthers https://www.chameleonforums.com/blo...-keepers-young-veiled-panther-chameleons.html You can use a normal household bulb for heat, cheaper and more effective with a range of wattage so you can reach your desired temps.

Ditch the night light, it will be keeping him awake and he will need a substantial drop in temperature so that he can fully shut down and rest. I think all this heat and light may be bothering him and may be part of the reason he won't eat or drink as he should. temps in the 60's are fine for night time.

Humidity seems a little high too. I keep my veiled at 40 to 60 with spikes up to 80 during mistings. A constant high humidity can lead to respiritory problems. Veiled chameleons are from Yemen, not a rain forest so they can cope with a bit lower humidity than some other species. Veiled chams wil eat plants and fruit too so you will want to find out what plant you have to make sure it's not toxic to your little friend. Here's a list of safe plants http://www.flchams.com/safe_plant_list.asp

I hope this helps you :) Feel free to ask any more questions!

Thank you for all the information. I was told babies should have more humidity and I was told the red night light is good as well, but then again maybe my baby chameleon would still be alive...

The crickets were small, a few may have been a little bigger then the space in between her eyes. She didn't seem like she hated her cage either, when we first got her she always went exploring. I may just have to go back to the store and slap the guy who told me they need more humidity and higher temperatures. I'll research more heavily then what I have been.

RIP Vaux

:( Sorry for your loss. Also anywhere that would sell that young of a chameleon I wouldn't buy from again. Checkout the classifieds on here and some of the sponsor. Again so sorry you lost your baby. :(

I think I cried all the tears I have. And it was LLLReptile, they keep like 20 or so babies in a 12x12x24... And half the employees don't really know what they're talking about. One kid was like 15...
